The rehabilitation process of a young and sporty patient following a trimalleolar fracture of the ankle: clinical case

Abstract:

Background and aim: ankle injuries are the most frequent orthopaedic trauma in the Emergency Department; ankle fracture can be defined unimalleolar (60-70%), bimalleolar (15-20%) and trimalleolar (7-12%) on the basis of the structure involved. Trimalleolar fracture is defined as a lesion that involved the medial malleolus, the posterior process of the tibia and the lateral malleolus; the trimalleolar fracture is considered instable and requires, in the most cases, a surgical treatment followed by a specific rehabilitation pathway. The primary aim was the optimal functional rehabilitation and an early return to the agonistic sport activity; the secondary aim was the reduction of the relapse risk. Material and methods: we describe the clinical case of a young athlete who suffered from a trimalleolar ankle fracture after an accident.

Background e obiettivi: i traumi della caviglia rappresentano uno dei principali motivi ortopedici di accesso in Pronto Soccorso; tra questi ci sono le fratture di caviglia che possono essere unimalleolari (60-70%), bimalleolari (15-20%) e trimalleolari (7-12%). Per frattura trimalleolare s'intende una lesione che coinvolge il malleolo mediale, il processo posteriore della tibia e il malleolo laterale; la frattura trimalleolare ? considerata una frattura instabile che richiede, nella maggior parte dei casi, una riduzione chirurgica seguita da un percorso riabilitativo mirato. L'obiettivo primario ? stato un recupero funzionale ottimale che consentisse un rientro all'attivit? sportiva agonistica; l'obiettivo secondario ? stato la riduzione del rischio di recidiva. Materiali e metodi: abbiamo descritto il caso di un giovane sportivo che ha subito una frattura trimalleolare di caviglia in seguito ad un incidente stradale.
