A Comparative Study of Bridel's The Life of St. Ivan and the Poem "What God? Man?"

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dvěma krátce po sobě vydanými díly Bedřicha Bridela, představitele vrcholného katolického baroka. Prvním z nich je prozaicko-veršované legendické dílo Život svatého Ivana, druhým pak rozsáhlá meditativní lyrická báseň „Co Bůh? Člověk?“. Jednotlivé kapitoly se věnují žánrovému zařazení děl a kontextu jejich vzniku, kompozici a veršovému schématu, tematice a motivice, uměleckým prostředkům, kterými jsou díla vystavěna, a čtenářskému publiku Bridelovy tvorby (jak baroknímu, tak i pozdějšímu). Závěrečná kapitola pak srovnává Bridela s autorem zahraničním, konkrétně s mystickým básníkem španělské renesance Juanem de la Cruzem, jehož poezie vykazuje celou řadu shod s poezií Bridelovou.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with two literary works written by Bedřich Bridel, a representative of Czech Baroque Catholic literature in its high period, namely with a hagiographic piece written in prosimetrum and called Život svatého Ivana (The Life of St. Ivan) and with an extensive meditative lyric poem called “Co Bůh? Člověk?” (“What God? Man?”). The individual chapters focus on their (sub)genres and the context of their origin, structure and the arrangement of verse scheme, themes and motifs, the artistic devices by which the literary works are built and on Bridel’s readership (both the Baroque and later readers). The closing chapter compares Bridel’s literary works with a foreign writer, particularly with the Spanish mystic poet Juan de la Cruz whose poetry resembles Bridel’s poetry in many aspects.
