The influence of body composition on facial morphology in participants of the A.D.A.P.T. project

Abstract:

Lidský obličej představuje důležitý biometrický a rozpoznávací znak. Změny v tělesném složení mohou mít vliv na morfologii obličeje a přeneseně mohou ovlivnit spolehlivost biometrického rozpoznání. Studie zkoumá vztah mezi morfologií obličeje a tělesnými parametry na souboru 133 jedinců středoevropského původu. Morfologie byla zkoumána prostřednictvím tvarové analýzy 3D obličejových skenů. Tělesné parametry byly zastoupeny výškou, váhou, BMI, dílčími tělesnými rozměry a údaji o množství podkožního tuku. Výsledky ukázaly, že mezi tvarem obličeje a tělesným složením existuje závislost. Se zvyšováním hodnot proměnných vyjadřujících tělesné složení docházelo k rozšíření obličeje ve střední a spodní třetině. Kontury obličeje se zakulacují a tváře působí plněji. Oblast glabelly a čela byla více vystouplá, s viditelnými nadočnicovými oblouky, které zasáhly do oční štěrbiny a opticky ji zúžily. Rty byly úzké s koutky vytočenými směrem dolů. Se snížením hodnot proměnných vyjadřující tělesné složení došlo k zúžení obličeje, propadnutí tváří a prominenci lícních kostí a celkových kontur obličeje. Oblast brady byla zašpičatělá a čelisti dosahovaly ostřejších tvarů. Oblast čela a obočí plynule navazovala na střední část obličeje, což opticky zvětšilo oči. Ty tak působily více otevřeně. Rty byly plnější s koutky stočenými nahoru.

Abstract:

The human face represents an important biometric and recognition feature. Changes in body composition can affect facial morphology and consequently, the reliability of biometric recognition. This study examines the relationship between facial morphology, and body composition on a sample of 133 individuals of Central European origin. Facial morphology was analysed using shape analysis of 3D facial scans. Body parameters included height, weight, BMI, specific body measurements, and subcutaneous fat data. The results showed that there is a relationship between facial morphology and body composition. As the values of variables representing body composition increased, the face expanded in its middle and lower thirds. Facial contours became rounder, and the cheeks appeared fuller. The glabella and forehead area became more prominent, with visible supraorbital arches encroaching on the orbits, making them appear narrower. The lips were thin with corners turned downward. With a decrease in the values of variables representing body composition, the face narrowed, the cheeks hollowed, and the cheekbones and overall facial contours became more prominent. The chin area became more pointed, and the jaws got sharper shapes. The forehead and eyebrow area transitioned smoothly into the middle part of the face, which visually enlarged the eyes, making them appear more open. The lips were fuller with corners turned upward.
