Comparison of the Monetary Policy of the Fed and the CNB and its Effects on the Economy in the Years 2000 to 2018

Abstract:

V důsledku existence hospodářských cyklů dochází v ekonomice ke fluktuacím, které mohou v krajním případě přerůst až v krizi. Monetární politika by svými nástroji měla tyto výkyvy tlumit a udržovat ekonomiku stabilní, na jejím potenciálu. Práce se soustředí na hodnocení schopnosti a úspěšnosti působení měnové politiky v této problematice. Konkrétním cílem práce je komparativní analýza měnové politiky ČNB a FEDu a jejího vlivu na hospodářství obou států v letech 2000 až 2019. V teoretické části práce předkládá pohled ekonomické teorie na měnovou politiku, její cíle, nástroje (včetně nekonvenčních) a transmisní mechanismy. Praktická část je zaměřena na detailní analýzu měnových politik obou bank a jejich vzájemnou komparaci a rovněž na komparativní analýzu vlivu měnových politik na jejich ekonomiky, která je prováděna na časových řadách srovnatelných makroekonomických agregátů. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá, že obě měnové politiky jsou schopné dosahovat svých vytyčených cílů, nicméně FED je v jejich naplňování úspěšnější. Stejný závěr platí i v problematice využití nekonvenčních nástrojů v reakci na finanční krizi.

Abstract:

In reaction on the existence of economic cycles, fluctuations occur in the economy, which can escalate into a crisis eventually. With its instruments, monetary policy should dampen these fluctuations and keep the economy stable, at its potential. The thesis focuses on the evaluation of the ability of monetary policy in this question. The specific aim of the thesis is a comparative analysis of the monetary policy of the CNB and the Fed and its impact on the economies of both countries in the years 2000 to 2019. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the view of economic theory on monetary policy, its objectives, tools (including unconventional) and transmission mechanisms. The practical part is focused on a detailed analysis of monetary policies of both banks and their comparison, as well as a comparative analysis of the impact of monetary policies on their economies, which is performed on time series of comparable macroeconomic aggregates. The results of the analysis prove that both monetary policies are able to achieve their set goals, however, the Fed is more successful. The same conclusion applies to the use of unconventional instruments in response to the financial crisis.
