Closeness and Turnout in French Legislative and Presidential Elections

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem těsnosti výsledku voleb na volební účast ve francouzských dvoukolových volbách, které umožňují využít ex-ante přístup pro operacionalizaci voličem předpokládané těsnosti výsledku voleb. Vliv těsnosti je testován ve volbách do Národního shromáždění a v prezidentských volbách z let 2002, 2007, 2012 a 2017. Výsledky prokazují kladný vliv těsnosti výsledku prvního kola voleb na účast v druhém kole voleb do Národního shromáždění, s výjimkou voleb v roce 2017. Ve francouzských prezidentských volbách je přítomnost vlivu těsnosti na účast zanedbatelná. Pouze v roce 2002 byl tento vliv prokazatelně záporný.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the effect of closeness on turnout in the French run-off elections that enable the use of an ex-ante approach of approximation of the presumed closeness. The effect is tested in the legislative and presidential elections of 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017. The results attest that there is a positive influence of closeness of ballot on the first round on turnout in the second round of the French legislative elections with the exception of the year 2017. In the French presidential elections the presence itself of an impact of closeness on turnout is very small, if any. Only in 2002 there was attested a negative effect of closeness on turnout.
