Indestructible Venus and Vulnerable Man: Ageing Sexuality in Medical Expertise during Czechoslovak Socialism

Abstract:

Ačkoliv vzrůstá výzkumný zájem o genderové a sexuální politiky za socialismu, sexualita lidí v post-reproduktivním věku v jeho agendě chybí. Disertační práce poodhaluje doposud skrytou historii sexuality ve stáří v socialistickém Československu, jejíž zmapování zpřesňuje dosavadní poznatky o genderu a sexualitě za socialismu. Hlavním cílem disertace je prozkoumat změny v síti medicínských expertů a posuny v expertíze, které vedly k postupnému odmítání stereotypního obrazu asexuálního stáří a umožnily vznik sexuálně aktivního sénia. Práce je inspirována sociologií expertízy Gila Eyala [2013], teorií vytváření lidí [making up people] Iana Hackinga [1995] a narativním výzkumným programem Andrewa Abbotta [2001], a analyzuje medicínské texty publikované převážně od konce 40. do 80. let 20. století. Experti (sexuologové, gynekologové, psychologové, psychiatři a kardiologové) se zabývali tématy stárnoucí sexuality ve dvou signifikantních osách. První se týkala konformní heterosexuální sexuality stárnoucích lidí, druhá se zaměřovala na pedofilní delikvenci starých mužů. Při shrnutí vývoje expertního vědění o stárnoucí sexualitě rozlišuji trajektorie (relativně stabilní a kauzální vzorce expertízy) a body zvratu [turning points] (určující momenty, které expertízu nasměrovaly na jinou cestu). Nejdříve sleduji expertízu věnovanou konformní heterosexuální stárnoucí sexualitě. První trajektorie expertního vědění o stárnoucí sexualitě je reprezentována gynekologickým zájmem o klimakterické ženy a zahrnuje období od 50. do počátku 70. let 20. století. V 50. letech se českoslovenští gynekologové zabývali klimakterickými ženami v souvislosti s jejich pracovní schopností a gynekologickým zdravím, a postupem času je začali klasifikovat i jako sexuální bytosti. Akcentuji roli nadnárodní cirkulace vědění a analyzuji, jak se expertíza proměnila poté, co se českoslovenští odborníci koncem 60. let seznámili s prací amerických sexuologů Williama Masterse a Virginie Johnson. Expertíza se posunula směrem ke zdůrazňování existence a důležitosti sexuálního potěšení pro (post)klimakterické ženy a vytvořila nový typ „sexuálně aktivní stárnoucí ženy“. Polovina až konec 70. let znamenaly pro stárnoucí sexualitu v československé expertíze bod zvratu. Expertní síť se proměnila s institucionalizací sexuologie v roce 1974. Sexuologové převzali agendu stárnoucí sexuality od gynekologů a problematiku sexuality stárnoucích žen odsunuli na vedlejší kolej. Zájem odborníků a státu o preventivní kardiovaskulární program vynesl koncem 70. let do popředí stárnoucí mužskou sexualitu. Kardiologická a sexuologická expertíza se prolnuly a experti začali řešit sexuální problémy kardiologických pacientů, přičemž vytvořili nový typ „sexuálně zranitelného stárnoucího muže“. Zatímco stárnoucí mužskou sexualitu označovali odborníci za zranitelnou, stárnoucím ženám začali přisuzovat stále aktivnější roli v sexuálních vztazích a označovali je za „nezranitelné Venuše“. V roce 1978 se konala zásadní konference – IV. Košické sexuologické dny, kde se odborníci kolektivně rozhodli více věnovat problematice stárnoucí sexuality. Druhá trajektorie expertízy tak zahrnuje 80. léta, kdy experti přesunuli pozornost od sexuality kardiaků k sexualitě zdravých seniorů a informovali laickou veřejnost o sexualitě ve stáří v populárně-naučných publikacích. Odborníci se zabývali především psychologickými příčinami erektilních poruch, protože pouze psychogenní impotence mohla být potenciálně léčitelná jedinými dostupnými metodami v socialistickém Československu – psychoterapií a nácvikem sexuálních technik inspirovaným léčbou sexuálních dysfunkcí Master

Starším lidem bylo doporučováno, aby změnili své sexuální scénáře [Simon, Gagnon 1984] a genderové role, zůstali sexuálně aktivní i ve vyšším věku a dostáli tak novému ideálu sexuálně aktivního stáří. V druhé části disertace analyzuji proměny expertízy zaměřené na starší pedofilní delikventy. Ukazuji, jak se klasifikace starších delikventů měnila v souladu se změnami v chápání konformní stárnoucí mužské sexuality a pedofilní delikvence. První trajektorie představuje typ „dementního stárnoucího pedofilního delikventa“. V padesátých letech se sexuologové nezabývali sexuálními deviacemi ani stárnoucí mužskou sexualitou a reprodukovali proto představu o starších dementních mužích jakožto primárních pachatelích pedofilní kriminality, která měla své kořeny v první předsocialistické sexuologické učebnici, jejímž autorem byl zakladatel československé sexuologie Josef Hynie. Jediná změna dané klasifikace vyplynula z rozsáhlého výzkumu pedofilních delikventů publikovaného v roce 1968, který vyvrátil stereotypní představu, že starší muži mají na svědomí většinu pedofilních deliktů. Bod zvratu v chápání starších pedofilních delikventů nastal taktéž v druhé polovině 70. let. Když odborníci uznali, že sexuální potřeby se stárnutím nemizí, vytvořili nový typ „osamělého a sexuálně frustrovaného stárnoucího delikventa“. Koncem 70. let se tak rozostřila hranice mezi tím, kdo byl obětí a kdo pachatelem pedofilních trestných činů, když v nich byli zainteresováni starší muži s nezletilými teenagery. Zatímco sexuologové bagatelizovali sexuální delikty starších mužů kvůli jejich bezmocnosti, obviňovali především deprivované děti a jejich dysfunkční rodiny. V průběhu normalizace v Československu odborníci věřili, že lze ze vztahové historie usuzovat sexuální normalitu jedince [Lišková 2018]. Zatímco tedy sexuologové hodnotili sexualitu mladých agresorů jako a priori problematickou, protože nebyli schopni navazovat vztahy se ženami, manželská historie starších delikventů v očích odborníků dokazovala, že muži netrpí deviací, ale pouze nedostatkem sexu (vyplývajícím z nedostatku příležitostí najít si ve stáří dospělou sexuální partnerku). V roce 1976 byla založena sexuologická ochranná léčba, totální instituce [Goffman 1961], která vedla k podstatné proměně expertízy, neboť poprvé umožnila odborníkům dlouhodobě pozorovat a kontrolovat starší delikventy. Druhá trajektorie tedy zahrnuje 80. léta 20. století, kdy sexuologové dospěli k závěru, že starší pedofilní delikventi nejsou ve většině případů dementní, ale že se často jedná o „pravé“ sexuální devianty. Na základě klinických zkušeností ze sexuologické ochranné léčby sexuologové vytvořili nový typ „stárnoucího pedofilního devianta“. Stručně řečeno, disertační práce analyzuje, jak českoslovenští experti začali odmítat stereotyp asexuálního stáří a umožnili vznik nových typů sexuálně aktivních seniorů. Současně potvrzuje, že liberalizace genderu a sexuality v socialistickém Československu nebyla lineární a přímočará, ale lišila se v závislosti na genderu i věku. Věk proto představuje zásadní proměnnou zasahující do genderových a sexuálních politik a neměl by být ve výzkumu genderu a sexuality za socialismu opomíjen. V neposlední řadě práce zdůrazňuje význam mezinárodní expertízy a cirkulace vědění o sexu od konce 60. let 20. století. Českoslovenští experti byli součástí mezinárodní expertní sítě a prosazovali stejné ideály sexuálně aktivního stáří (týkající se heterosexuálních konformních praktik) jako jejich západní kolegové v 80. letech.

Abstract:

While research on gender and sexual politics under socialism is on the rise, the sexuality of people in their post-reproductive age has been missing from its agenda. This dissertation reveals the as-yet uncovered history of ageing sexuality in socialist Czechoslovakia, and refines the existing knowledge of gender and sexuality under socialism. The main goal is to examine the changes in the networks of medical experts and the shifts in expertise that led to a gradual rejection of the stereotypical image of asexual old age and enabled the emergence of the sexually active elderly. Inspired by Gil Eyal’s [2013] sociology of expertise, Ian Hacking’s [1995] theory of making up people, and Andrew Abbott’s [2001] narrative programme of research, I analysed medical texts published primarily between the late 1940s and 1980s. The medical experts (mainly sexologists, gynaecologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and cardiologists) discussed the topics of ageing sexuality in two prominent axes. The first axis was conventional heterosexual ageing sexuality; the second axis focused on the paedophilic delinquency of old men. Summarizing the developments in expert understanding of ageing sexuality, I distinguish between trajectories (relatively stable and causal patterns of expertise) and turning points (defining moments that set the expertise on a different path). First, I track the expertise targeting conventional heterosexual ageing sexuality. The first trajectory of expert knowledge about ageing sexuality is represented by gynaecological interests in climacteric women and encompasses the 1950s through the early 1970s. Czechoslovak gynaecologists started viewing climacteric women in connection with their working capacities and gynaecological health in the 1950s, and over time they viewed them more as sexual beings. I highlight the role of transnational knowledge circulation and analyse how expertise was transformed after Czechoslovak experts became acquainted with the work of the U.S. sexologists William Masters and Virginia Johnson in the late 1960s. Expertise shifted toward emphasizing the existence and importance of sexual pleasure for (post)climacteric women, and a new kind of ‘sexually active ageing women’ emerged. The mid-to-late 1970s marked a turning point for ageing sexuality in Czechoslovak expertise. The expert network changed when sexology was institutionalized in 1974. Sexologists took over the ageing sexuality agenda from gynaecologists and put the issues of ageing women’s sexuality to the side. The interest of experts and the state in preventive cardiovascular programmes brought ageing male sexuality to the fore in the late 1970s. Cardiological and sexological expertise intersected and began to address the sexual problems of cardiac patients. The experts made up a new kind of ‘sexually vulnerable ageing men’. The experts described ageing male sexuality as vulnerable, and they attributed a more active role in sexual relationships to ageing women, labelling them as ‘indestructible Venuses’. In 1978, a crucial conference – the IV. Košice Sexology Days – took place, where the experts collectively decided to pay more attention to issues of ageing sexuality. Thus, the second trajectory of the expertise covers the 1980s, when experts shifted their attention from the sexuality of cardiac patients towards the sexuality of the healthy elderly and informed the lay public about ageing sexuality in popular-science publications. The experts primarily discussed the psychological causes of impotence, because only psychogenic impotence could be treated by the methods available in a socialist country – psychotherapy and sexual technique training, inspired by Masters and Johnson’s treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Elderly people were advised to change their sexual scripts [Simon, Gagnon 1984] and gender roles in order to remain sexually active in old age and to fulfil the new idea(l) of the sexually active elderly.

Abstract:

Second, I analyse the transformations of expertise targeting elderly paedophilic delinquents. I show how sexologists’ classifications of elderly delinquents shifted in accordance with changes in the understanding of conventional ageing male sexuality as well as of paedophilic delinquency. The first trajectory is represented by a kind of ‘demented elderly paedophilic delinquent’. During the 1950s, sexologists were concerned neither with sexual deviance nor with male ageing sexuality, and they reproduced the idea of elderly demented men as the primarily offenders in paedophilic crimes, an idea that had its roots in the first pre-socialist sexological textbook written by the founder of Czechoslovak sexology Josef Hynie. The change in this classification resulted from extensive research of paedophilic delinquents published in 1968, which refuted the stereotypical idea that in most cases paedophilic offenders are elderly men. The late 1970s brought a turning point in the understanding of elderly paedophilic delinquents. When the experts acknowledged that sexual needs did not vanish with ageing, they made up a new kind of ‘lonely and sexually frustrated elderly’. In the late 1970s, boundaries blurred between who were the victims and who were the offenders in paedophilic crimes when elderly men were involved with underaged teenagers. Sexologists downplayed elderly sexual delicts because of their helplessness and instead blamed depraved children and their dysfunctional families. In Czechoslovakia during ‘normalization’, relationship histories served the experts as confirmation of sexual normality [Lišková 2018]. Thus, whereas the sexologists evaluated the sexuality of young aggressors as a priori problematic, because they were unable to establish relationships with women, the marital history of the elderly delinquents proved to the experts that the men did not suffer from sexual deviation but simply from a lack of sex resulting from the absence of opportunity to find a mature partner in old age. In 1976, sexological protective treatment was founded, a total institution [Goffman 1961] resulting in the substantial transformation of the expertise. The novel institution enabled experts to observe and control elderly delinquents over the long term for the first time. Thus, the second trajectory covers the 1980s, when the sexologists concluded that elderly paedophilic offenders were not demented in most cases, but rather that they were often ‘true’ sexual deviants. Based on clinical experiences from sexological protective treatment, sexologists made up a new kind of ‘elderly paedophilic deviant’. On the whole, the dissertation analyses how Czechoslovak medical experts rejected the asexual elderly stereotype and enabled the emergence of new kinds of sexually active elderly. Simultaneously, it argues that the liberalization of gender and sexuality in socialist Czechoslovakia was not linear and straightforward but differed according to gender and age. Age represents a crucial variable intervening in gender and sexual politics and should not be omitted from the research on gender and sexuality under socialism. Last but not least, the thesis emphasizes the significance of transnational expertise and circulation of sexual knowledge since the late 1960s. The Czechoslovak experts were part of an international expert network and promoted the same idea(l)s of the sexually active elderly (in terms of conventional heterosexual practices) as their Western colleagues in the 1980s.
