How moths escape bats: predator–prey interactions

Abstract:

Teoretická část této práce pojednává o adaptacích, které umožnují motýlům odolávat predaci letounů se zvláštním ohledem na behaviorální reakce spojené se vznikem tympanálního orgánu a jeho přítomností mezi fylogenetickými skupinami. Dále jsou v práci uvedeny i adaptace letounů, které by jim mohli umožnovat toto únikové chování obcházet. Cílem praktické části pak bylo u vybraných zástupců nočních motýlů získat údaje o jejich únikovém chování pomocí playbackového experimentu ve voliéře. V experimentu byly použity nahrávky echolokace od šesti druhů letounů – Barbastella barbastellus, Plecotus auritus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Eptesicus serotinus, Rhinolophus euryale a R. hipposideros. Nejvíce jedinců provádějících únikové manévry bylo zaznamenáno v reakci na nahrávky druhu P. auritus, naopak na nahrávky druhů rodu Rhinolophus a druhu B. barbastellus nebyla zaznamenána reakce žádná. U zástupců čeledí Noctuidae, Drepanidae, Notodontidae nebyly zjištěny téměř žádné reakce, na rozdíl od početných reakcí zástupců z čeledí Geometridae a Crambidae. Naprostá většina sledovaného únikového chování představovala eratický manévr, kdy sledovaný jedinec reagoval pomocí prudkého zatočení nebo začal létat ze strany na stranu (zig-zag). Získané výsledky o únikových manévrech pak byly porovnávány s daty získanými z molekulární analýzy netopýřího trusu.

Abstract:

The theoretical part of this work discusses the adaptations with which moths can resist predation by bats; special regard is given to the behavioural responses associated with the formation of the tympanic organ and their presence among phylogenetic groups. Additionally, bat adaptations that could enable them to bypass this evasive behaviour are also discussed here. The practical part aimed to catch selected moths and record their escape manoeuvres through a playback experiment conducted in the aviary. Echolocation recordings from the approach phase of six bats species were used in this experiment – Barbastella barbastellus, Plecotus auritus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Eptesicus serotinus, Rhinolophus euryale and R. hipposideros. Most individuals performing escape maneuvers were recorded in response to the playbacks of P. auritus, while no response was recorded to the playbacks of bats from the order Rhinolophus and B. barbastellus. Almost none or no reactions have been recorded from species belonging to the families Noctuidae, Drepanidae and Notodontidae, this was in contrast to species from the families Geometridae and Crambidae. Most of the recorded manoeuvres were erratic, where the observed individuals responded with a sharp turn or performed zig-zag flight. Recorded data on evasive manoeuvres was then compared with a molecular analysis of bat droppings using the methods of DNA metabarcoding.
