Use of the Internet in real communication at English language teaching

Abstract:

Snaha o "moderní přístup" k výuce cizích jazyků je v dnešní době charakteristická svým spojením s multimediální technikou. Rozvoj technického vybavení škol, zejména pak dostupnost internetu, učitelům otevírá nové možnosti při přístupu k praktické a zábavné formě výuky cizích jazyků. Tato práce vychází z myšlenky, že jazyk se nejlépe učí při reálné komunikaci pro reálnou komunikaci. V praxi je pak tato myšlenka realizovaná navozením reálné komunikace za použití internetu mezi studenty z různých kulturních prostředí, pro které je cílový jazyk sekundární. V teoretické části se tato práce zabývá současnými technickými prostředky a komunikačními prostory, které s realizací této myšlenky souvisí. Zamýšlí se nad specifiky sociálního styku v rámci internetu a nad modelem internetové komunikace. Část teoretických úvah je pak věnována komunikativním kompetencím a možnostem jejich rozvoje právě skrze reálnou komunikaci v prostředí internetu. V závěru teoretické části je pak navržen nejvhodnější způsob realizace reálné komunikace v rámci internetu zejména z hlediska pedagoga a jeho pedagogických potřeb. Výzkumná část práce se věnuje měření a zkoumání konkrétní realizace reálné komunikace mezi skupinami studentů z Holandska a České republiky. Cílem výzkumu bylo ověřit použitelnost výuky cizích jazyků za pomoci navození reálné komunikace v rámci internetu v praxi, prozkoumat zejména přístup studentů k tomuto modernímu způsobu výuky, identifikovat případné problémy a navrhnout konkrétní pedagogická opatření.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the idea of use of the internet in real communication between students of different cultural environments at English language teaching. It is based on the idea that the best method of language teaching is by use of real communication for real communication. The work concerns the basic model of social contact, which is transferred to the model of social contact within the internet, including a listing of possible social mistakes and their prevention. Together with the social contact within the internet is discussed the safety of the internet space and possible negative situations which can occur. Essential part is the analysis of technical realization of communication processes which includes the analysis of computer networks and basic means of communication, without which the project couldn't have been realized. These means of communication are thoroughly compared not only from the pedagogical point of view, but also from the technical ones. For needs of the project the best solution seems to be the active turn-based means of communication. In connection with the active turn-based means of communication is important the right selection of communication space as well. These can be divided into personal and public. On the basis of the analysis of these spaces the BBS system is selected as the most appropriate for the project. Among the main reasons were its potentials in pedagogical control, accessibility, simplicity and flexibility. Together with the selection of the technical realization the issue of methodological approach from the point of view of communicative competences occurred. The components being discussed in this part were the grammatical, phatic and objective, discourse, strategic and socio-cultural. Concerned with the real communication within the internet between students from different cultural environments, no obstacles appeared in the development of all components of communicative competence. On the basis of the research several recommendations were stated. In case, that teachers would follow these recommendations in future projects, the negative aspects that caused early termination of the realization of real communication should be minimized or maybe even eliminated.
