Contemporary graffiti subculture in the PRC

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá současnou subkulturou graffiti a její tvorbou v Čínské lidové republice, kdy se nejdříve zaměřuje na charakterizování této subkultury z hlediska jejích členů, jednotlivých druhů a významu tvorby. Následně práce vysvětluje přístup čínského státu ke graffiti, vymezuje specifika a odlišnosti čínských graffiti oproti euroamerickým. Cílem práce je popsat znaky čínské subkultury graffiti pomocí sekundární literatury a získaných informací od samotných čínských umělců graffiti. Dále porovnat tyto dvě hlediska a určit do jaké míry se názory čínských tvůrců shodují s fakty z použité literatury zabývající se tímto tématem. První kapitoly práce jsou postaveny na metodě kompilace sekundární zdrojů. Vlastní pohled umělců byl zjištěn za pomocí analýzy výsledků kvalitativního výzkumu, který probíhal v únoru a březnu 2019 formou rozhovorů přes sociální sítě. Tyto získané údaje byly následně použitím metody komparace porovnány s informacemi ze sekundárních zdrojů. Výsledkem této práce je ucelené vymezení čínské subkultury graffiti a zjištění, že informace z odborné literatury korespondují s názory čínských umělců graffiti. Popis čínské subkultury graffiti z použité literatury se tak bez výraznějších odlišností shoduje s pohledem samotných čínských tvůrců na tuto problematiku.

Abstract:

This bachelor´s thesis focuses on a contemporary graffiti subculture and its creation in the People´s Republic of China. It first concentrates on characterizing this subculture from the standpoint of its members, types of creation and their meanings. Afterwards, it explains China´s attitude to graffiti and defines the specifics and differences of Chinese graffiti versus Euro-American graffiti. The aim of this thesis is to describe the characteristics of the Chinese graffiti subculture using secondary literature and acquired information from Chinese graffiti artists themselves. Next, it compares these two aspects and determines to what extent the views of Chinese writers correspond with facts from the literature related to this topic. The first chapters of the thesis are based on the method of compiling secondary sources. The artists´own views were found through an analysis of the results of the qualitative research conducted in February and March 2019 through interviews on social media. Afterwards, these data were compared to information from secondary sources using a comparison method. The result of this thesis is a comprehensive definition of the Chinese graffiti subculture and the finding that information from the literature corresponds to the views of Chinese graffiti artists. The definition of the Chinese graffiti subculture from the used literature is without significant differences and consistent with the description of the Chinese graffiti artists themselves.
