Palimpsestous Selves: Transgressing the Boundaries of Genre in Angela Carter's and Margaret Atwood's Fiction

Anotácia:

Dizertačná práca s názvom „Palimpsestous Selves: Transgressing the Boundaries of Genre in Angela Carter’s and Margaret Atwood’s Fiction” porovnáva románovú tvorbu britskej spisovateľky Angely Carter a kanadskej autorky Margaret Atwood. Využitím metód literárnej komparatistiky, feministickej, psychoanalytickej kritiky a žánrovej teórie dizertačná práca analyzuje postmoderný charakter románovej tvorby oboch spisovateliek. Okrem úvodu a záveru je rozdelená do troch hlavných kapitol. Tvorba Angely Carterovej a Margaret Atwoodovej nesie mnoho spoločných znakov: intertextualita, prekračovanie hraníc écriture féminine, ale aj literárnych a najmä žánrových konvencií. Metódami literárnej komparatistiky, feministickej a psychoanalytickej literárnej kritiky je možné odhaliť, že obe spisovateľky otvárajú svoje diela pre kreatívneho čitateľa, a tak ho zapájajú do procesu konštruovania textu. Cieľom dizertačnej práce je ukázať, že podobne, ako sú literárne texty oboch spisovateliek otvorené, hybridné a fragmentárne, identity ich literárnych postáv pripomínajú viacvrstvové palimpsesty pozostávajúce z útržkov pôvodných a novších vrstiev. Vývoj identity Carterovej a Atwoodovej literárnych postáv je v dizertačnej práci skúmaný v chronologickom priereze ich tvorby, ktorý ukazuje výrazné posuny od urputnej snahy o koherentný a jednotný subjekt v ich skorších dielach až po akceptovanie pluralitnej, mnohovrstvovej a krehkej identity v neskorších románoch. Zároveň tento prístup umožňuje vidieť transformáciu vnímania identity v súvislosti s premenami feministickej teórie od protofeminizmu, ktorý identifikovateľného v raných textoch, až po postfeministicky ladenú neskorú tvorbu. Diela oboch autoriek demonštrujú kritické postoje k feministickým konceptom, preto boli obe autorky často obviňované z antifeminizmu dokonca mizogýnstva. Podobnosť písania Carterovej a Atwoodovej nespočíva iba v príbuznosti tématickej, ale aj v typologickej. V každej kapitole preto sledujem žánrové premeny a presahy žánrových foriem od tzv. ženských žánrov, cez science fiction a speculative fiction, ktorá bola pôvodne písaná najmä mužmi a pre mužov, až po fiktívne autobiografie rozprávané mimoriadne nespoľahlivými rozprávačkami. Intertextuálna hravosť Carterovej a Atwoodovej textov je zvýraznená otvorenými až ambiguentnými koncami, preto sa dizertačná práca vyhýba nielen jednoznačnému klasifikovaniu románov do žánrových kategórií, ale aj zaraďovaniu autoriek ako feministických alebo anti-feministických spisovateliek. Naopak, otvorenosť Carterovej a Atwoodovej diel vyzýva čitateľov k otvorenému, empatickému a tolerantnému vnímaniu nielen literárnych postáv, ale aj svojho okolia.

Abstract:

The dissertation titled Palimpsestous Selves: Transgressing the Boundaries of Genre in Angela Carter’s and Margaret Atwood’s Fiction is a literary comparative study which uses the keys of close-reading, feminist criticism, psychological criticism, and genre theory to analyze the postmodernist writing of Angela Carter and Margaret Atwood. In terms of formal organization, it is divided into three main chapters according to the thematic and formal similarities in Carter’s and Atwood’s novels. The dissertation examines the ways in which the mutual conversation of Carter’s and Atwood’s fiction is fruitful. The prime contribution of reading Carter and Atwood together lies in revealing their shared strategies of writing beyond genre conventions, depicting the constructedness of the self, inscribing the body into the text, transgressing écriture feminine as well as the feminist tradition. Moreover, Carter’s and Atwood’s novels are suffused with humour and rich intertextuality. By confronting the readers with play, the writers invite the reading audience to participate in the process of constructing the text. In each chapter of the dissertation, Carter’s and Atwood’s novels are chosen according to typological (generic) similarities to show how the authors transgress the boundaries between genres. Moreover, in the development of their writing, it is possible to demonstrate the shifts in the understanding of the self, from the desire for a united and perfect identity, through splitting and doubling of the self, towards plural and fragmented selves. Finally, reading of their fiction in a mostly chronological order supports my argument that Carter’s and Atwood’s writing should not be discussed in strict terms of feminism or anti-feminism because of the open and visionary qualities of their texts. I emphasize that their novels criticize the suffering and victimization of both women and men. Thus, they celebrate the values of tolerance, empathy, love and friendship.
