Intermediality in Photography

Abstract:

Disertační práce Intermedialita fotografie je úvahou nad způsobem vnímání, užití a postavení fotografie v současném umění. Zaměřuje se na myšlení o fotografii v intermediálních souvislostech, kdy dochází k fůzi mezi uměleckými médii a oblastmi přesahujícími rámec vizuální kultury. Část textu je věnována otázkám pojmového definování mezimediálních forem a část obsahuje praktické ukázky přístupů k dané problematice. Zatímco kapitola Cesta z obrazu popisuje a komentuje různé způsoby fyzického překračování tradiční formy fotografického obrazu, kapitola Cesta za obraz představuje snahy o opuštění obsahového rámce média fotografie a obrazovosti obecně. Jako příklad rozdílnosti pojetí konkrétního termínu je uveden a analyzován pojem nefotografie. Praktickou část práce tvoří tzv. pokusy, které jsou zčásti autorským projektem a zčásti experimentem organizovaným formou workshopů. Tyto pokusy demonstrují obtížnost praktické realizace teoretických východisek založených právě na pravděpodobné nemožnosti jejich materializace. Základní premisou celé úvahy je snaha o uchopení fotografie metodou mapování oblastí, které s ní souvisí, ale médiem fotografie nejsou. Výraz intermediální je předkládán jako možnost vhodnějšího pojmenování uvedených způsobů myšlení na úkor příliš obecného pojmu konceptuální.

Abstract:

This dissertation, dealing with Intermediality in Photography, is a reflection on the modes of perception, the use and role of photography in contemporary art. It focuses on photography in an intermedial context, where a fusion of artistic media and areas beyond the framework of visual culture takes place. Part of the text is dedicated to questions regarding conceptual definitions of intermedial forms, while another section contains practical examples of approaches to the studied problematic. While the chapter Journey Out of the Picture describes and comments on various methods of overcoming traditional forms of photographic imagery, the chapter Journey Beyond the Picture presents attempts to abandon the content framework of photography as a medium and imagery in general. As an example of the varied understanding of a particular term, the text introduces and analyzes the term 'non-photography'. The practical section is made up of so-called experiments, which are in part the author's own project and partly an experiment organised in the form of a workshop. These experiments demonstrate the challenges of practical realisations of a theoretical stand point, which are rooted in the preconception that their materialization will likely be impossible.The core premise of the reflection is an attempt at grasping photography by mapping areas that relate to it, but are not photographic media. The term intermedial is presented as a possibly more suitable alternative, as opposed to the more general term conceptual.
