Analysis of the strategic thinking and behaviour of Iran

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje strategické myšlení a jednání Íránského režimu, jež jsou formovány antagonismem ke Spojeným státům. Po nastínění geopolitických predispozic a dalších východisek íránské zahraniční politiky zjišťuje, že se nejedná o teokracii, ale diktaturu. Text dále zkoumá koncentraci moci v Íránu, motivy jednání íránského režimu, jeho strategické cíle a metody k jejich dosahování. Účelem islamistické ideologie a íránského ústavního pořádku je legitimizace autority Vůdce, který zemi vládne s pomocí Revolučních gard. Hlavní motiv jejich jednání, pocit ohrožení, je příčinou vnitřní represe a agresivní rétoriky navenek. Cílem režimu je zachování vlastní moci a dosažení hegemonie v regionu. K tomu má sloužit komplexní strategie založená na potřebě vnějšího nepřítele, jejíž nejvýznamnější prvek tvoří snaha o získání statutu jaderné mocnosti.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses the strategic thinking and behaviour of the Iranian regime, which are shaped by the antagonism to the United States. After the outline of geopolitical predispositions and other foundations of Iranian foreign policy, it ascertains it is not a theocracy, but a dictatorship. Furthermore, the text examines the concentration of power in Iran, motives of the behaviour of the Iranian regime, its strategic aims, and methods of their accomplishment. The purpose of Islamic ideology and the Iranian constitutional order is the legitimization of the Supreme Leader’s authority, who rules the country with help of the Revolutionary Guards. The main motive of their behaviour, their feeling of threat, is the cause of internal repression, as well as aggressive external rhetoric. The regime’s objective is to maintain its power and attain hegemony in the region. This purpose is served by a complex strategy based on the need of an external enemy, of which the most significant component is the attempt to achieve status of the nuclear power.
