Dust on the ruins (historical image, estethics of melancholy and metaphore in the work of Walter Benjamin)

Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza některých podstatných momentů, jež charakterizují myšlení Waltera Benjamina. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována stopám, jež v jeho myšlení a cítění zanechal obecný fakt pomíjivosti. V první kapitole jsou načrtnuty hlavní charakteristiky ontologické perspektivy, z níž se k Benjaminově dílu vztahujeme. Tvůrčím způsobem zde navazujeme na práci Sade, Fourier, Loyola Rolanda Barthese. Dále se obracíme ke dvěma oblastem, jež tvořily jádro Benjaminovy teoretické intervence: teorii materialistické historiografie a estetické analýze fenoménu melancholie. Souvislost mezi motivy, s nimiž se v Benjaminových textech setkáváme, nepramení pouze v obsahové úrovni, ale také úrovni biografematické. Na celé ploše práce sledujeme Benjaminovu spřízněnost s některými specifickými rysy melancholie. Analýza ústí v poukaz na fakt, že melancholické gesto, jež Benjaminovi přisuzujeme, je přítomno také v metaforickém způsobu vyjadřování. Metaforu zde nahlížíme jako vyjadřovací způsob, který nejlépe odpovídá povaze Benjaminovy teoretické intervence.

Abstract:

Our aim in this paper is to analyze some of the essential moments, which distinguish the thought of Walter Benjamin. We mainly focus on the marks left on Benjamin?s thought and sentiment by the fact of universal transiency. In a first chapter, we sketch the main characteristics of the ontological perspective, which represents our reference point of view. In a creative way, we continue in some motives of Roland Barthes?s work Sade, Fourier, Loyola. In the following chapters, we turn our attention to areas, which played an essential role in Benjamin?s theoretical inquiry: theory of materialistic historiography and aesthetic analysis of melancholy. Connection between the motives we find in Benjamin?s works springs not only in the area of content, but also in the biographematic area. In a whole work, we follow connections between Benjamin and some characteristics typical for melancholy. Our text ends with a reference to a connection between Benjamin?s melancholic gesture and metaphorical diction. We think of metaphor as a mode of a diction, which fits the best with the nature of Benjamin?s theoretical inquiry.
