All Quiet on the Wide-Screen. Preparations for the introduction of wide-screen formats in Czech cinema (1953-1956)

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje přípravám na zavedení širokoúhlého kinematografického formátu v české kinematografii (1953-1956). Zaměřuje se přitom na promítací stroje jako nejpočetnější skupinu strojního vybavení, kterou je nutno při zavádění nové techniky přizpůsobit. Sleduje domácí výrobu promítacích strojů, a to v rámci celku poválečného hospodářství procházejícího strukturální přeměnou spojenou se směřováním k socialistickému uspořádání československé společnosti. Hlavním cílem je popsat možnosti zavedení nového kinematografického formátu v prostředí se specifickým společenským uspořádáním.

Abstract:

In her dissertation thesis “All Quiet on the Wide-Screen”, the author wants to describe the first years of preparation for introduction of new widescreen formats in Czechoslovak cinema. Choosing the years 1953-1956 as central for her research, she concentrates on theatre presentation and changes inside theatres, and particularly on production of projection machines in Czechoslovakia. In doing so, she also follows the evolution of the relations between the state-owned cinema industry, state firms providing the machines, and other institutions involved, between 1945 and 1960, in the context of the post-war Czechoslovak national economy.
