Standards and possibilities of open-source software

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je věnována problematice open-source software. Objasňuje teoretické aspekty, pojmy a názvosloví spojená s touto oblastí, obsahuje základní kategorizaci open-source softwaru z pohledu způsobu využití jednotlivých produktů a představení konkrétních zástupců těchto kategorií. Část práce je věnována také problematice využívání open-source produktů v prostředí státní správy a školství. Obsahem praktické části této diplomové práce je srovnání vlastností populárního open-source produktu – OpenOffice.org, konkrétně tabulkového procesoru Calc s jeho komerčně šířeným konkurentem Microsoft Excel. Srovnání bylo prováděno s ohledem na předem zvolenou aplikační oblast těchto produktů - pro účely managementu, konkrétně analýzu a prezentaci finančních ukazatelů. Výsledkem srovnání je přehled o míře rozdílů mezi těmito dvěma aplikacemi při použití v dané oblasti a posouzení použitelnosti Calcu právě v této předem definované aplikační oblasti. Součástí praktické části je rovněž krátký dotazníkový průzkum obecného povědomí uživatelů o open-source a oblíbenosti vybraných open-source produktů mezi nimi.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis follows the problems of open-source software. It clarifies the theoretical aspects and the terminology related to this area, contains the basic categorization of the open-source software from the point of view of the utilization of particular products and presents several representatives of the individual categories. One part of the thesis describes the problems of using open-source products in public administration and the educational system. The practical part of this diploma thesis compares the features of OpenOffice.org, a popular open-source product, namely its spreadsheet processor Calc and its commercially propagated competitor Microsoft Excel. This comparison has been made according to a previously defined sphere of utilization, namely for needs of management and analysis and presentation of financial indicators. The result of the comparison is a summary of particular differences between these two products and the assessment of applicability of Calc within the defined range of application. The practical part of the thesis also contains a brief questionnaire research which was intended to have found out about the general awareness of users about open-source products and their popularity.
