Darwin and his <I>On the Origin of Species</I> as a part of the evolution of thought in nineteenth century Britain

Abstract:

Práce představuje pokus o vsazení Darwinovy knihy O původu druhů a teorie v ní představené do myšlenkového prostředí Velké Británie devatenáctého století a o analýzu následného odzrcadlení vlivu teorie v literatuře. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, jaké faktory se podílely na úspěchu knihy, a do jaké míry se specifické podmínky, které toto dílo provázely, zasloužily o šíření Darwinových myšlenek mezi různými vrstvami britské společnosti. Zkoumání textu Darwinovy knihy, jeho struktury, jazyka, a původu myšlenek, které v něm Darwin představuje, by mělo poskytnout hlubší představu o tom, co dělá samotný text atraktivním, oblíbeným a akceptovatelným natolik, že se jím zaobíraly široké vrstvy. S přihlédnutím na okolnosti publikace a Darwinův společenský i vědecký status je zkoumána také šíře vrstev, které se ve skutečnosti Darwinovými myšlenkami zabývaly. Recepce teorie závisela na širokém spektru okolností, které se rozpínalo od činů a názorů jednotlivců až po způsob myšlení a stav vědění v britské společnosti. Stupeň přijetí Darwinových myšlenek byl jiný u každého jednotlivce, a ne každý byl dokonale obeznámen se skutečnou verzí těchto myšlenek tak, jak byly představeny v knize O původu druhů. V této práci je speciální pozornost věnovaná percepci a reflexi teorie ve vědeckých, církevních a literárních kruzích. Vzhledem k tomu, že literatura se stala jedním z dalších šiřitelů Darwinova poselstva, a taktéž podává svědectví o tom, jak teorie ovlivnila myšlení a vnímání lidí, se práce pokouší také o exemplifikaci Darwinova vlivu na dětskou literaturu, konkrétně na knihu Alenka v říši divů.

Abstract:

This thesis presents an attempt to set Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species and the theory that it introduces into the context of the thought of the nineteenth century Britain and to analyse the consequent reflexion of the impact of the theory in literature. The main aim of the thesis is to find out what contributed to the success of the book and to what extent were the specific conditions of its existence responsible for the spread of Darwinian thought among various classes of British society. The analysis of Darwin’s text, its structure, language and the origin of thoughts that Darwin introduces in it should offer a more complex image of what makes the text so attractive, popular and accepted to such an extent that it could occupy a place in the general discourse of wider public. The contemplation of the circumstances of the publication and Darwin’s scientific and social status helps to examine the extent of public reception. The nature of the reception depended on a wide spectrum of circumstances, which ranged from the actions and opinions of individuals to the way of thinking and the state of knowledge in the British society. The level of acceptance of Darwinian thoughts varied on the individual level. Not everybody was acquainted with the exact version of the theory, as it is explained in The Origin of Species. In this thesis a special attention is paid to the reception of the theory in the scientific, religious and literary circles. Literature became one of the carriers of Darwin’s message and it also offers a testimony about the way the theory influenced human perception and thinking. Therefore, the thesis also attempts to exemplify Darwin’s influence on the children literature, namely Alice in Wonderland.
