Sources and distributions of long-lived organic pollutants in air and atmospheric deposition in central Europe

Abstract:

Polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky (PAU) jsou všudypřítomné toxické polutanty vznikající během nedokonalého spalování lidského i přírodního původu (např. z dopravy, z těžkého průmyslu nebo přírodních požárů). Primárně tedy vstupují do životního prostředí do atmosféry. Jedná se o semivolatilní látky, což znamená, že se v atmosféře rozdělují mezi plynnou a částicovou fázi v závislosti na svých vlastnostech, meteorologických podmínkách a složení aerosolu. Toto rozdělování hraje klíčovou roli v jejich environmentálním osudu. PAU také můžou v atmosféře podléhat fotochemickým reakcím, což vede ke vzniku jejich derivátů, které můžou být toxičtější než původní sloučeniny. Cílem této práce bylo popsat PAU a jejich deriváty v atmosférickém prostředí na regionální pozaďové lokalitě. Jednalo se o observatoř Košetice, která je součástí různých monitorovacích sítí. Tato práce se zaměřuje na atmosférickou depozici a její sezonní a lokální změny. Další část práce je věnována derivátům PAU v ovzduší, konkrétně nitrovaným a oxidovaným. Důraz byl kladen na jejich sezonní změny, rozdělení mezi plynnou a částicovou fázi a jejich meziroční koncentrační variace. Pro tyto sloučeniny se jednalo o první víceroční studii.

Abstract:

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous toxic contaminants which are produced by the incomplete combustion of complex organic substances. Sources may be anthropogenic, for example the burning of fossil fuels, or of a natural origin like wildfires. The main route of PAHs to the environment is through atmospheric emissions. They are semi-volatile organic compounds, meaning they are partitioning in the air to both particulate and gaseous phases. This process is depending on their physico-chemical properties, meteorological conditions, and aerosol matrix composition. The varying partitioning also heavily influences their environmental fate. Furthermore parent-PAHs in the air can react with oxidants and form derivates that may be even more toxic. The main aim of this thesis was to describe PAHs and their derivates in the atmospheric environment at a regional background air monitoring station (Košetice Observatory in the Czech Republic). This observatory was founded to measure and evaluate long term contaminant trends in the atmosphere at Czech background concentrations and is part of many national and international monitoring programs and networks. This thesis focused on atmospheric deposition, its seasonal and spatial variability, with respect to PAHs. Further investigation was on PAHs’ derivatives, specifically the nitrated and oxygenated forms and how their seasonal variations, and distribution between gaseous and particulate phase may change, through the investigation of a multiyear time series. For these compounds, this was to date the first multi-year study of its kind.
