Creativity in younger school age children with specific reading disabilities

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zpracovat problematiku kreativity u dětí mladšího školního věku se specifickou poruchou učení. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na komplexní popis problematiky dyslexie, jsou představeny teorie, které udávají směr nahlížení na fenomén specifických poruch čtení. Dále se zabývá kreativitou, která dle aktuálního stavu poznání s poruchou čtení významně souvisí, a také možnostmi identifikace těchto dětí. Empirická část obsahuje deskriptivní, explorační a statistické zpracování dat získaných prostřednictvím diagnostického nástroje T-59, Torranceho figurálním testem tvořivého myšlení, který byl administrován na výzkumném souboru 65 dětí dyslektické a 77 dětí neklinické populace ve věku 6-12 let. Empirická část práce se rovněž zabývá vztahem mezi originalitou (jednou z forem divergentního myšlení) a uměle zkonstruovaným verbálním skórem, jehož prostřednictvím poukazuje na potenciál využití T-59 jako nástroje měření verbální kreativity. Získaná data a z nich vyplývající skutečnosti nepotvrzují existenci signifikantně vyšší úrovně figurální kreativity u dyslektické populace ani v jedné ze základních čtyř forem divergentního myšlení zachycovaných T-59. Celkové výsledky úrovně figurální kreativity se u obou skupin liší jen velmi málo (ve všech čtyřech oblastech divergentního myšlení neklinická populace zanedbatelně převyšuje dyslektické protějšky). V rámci sledování potenciálu využití T-59 jako metody zevrubně měřící verbální kreativitu byl objeven středně silný signifikantní vztah mezi výší uměle vytvořeného verbálního skóru a originalitou, jednou z forem divergentního myšlení. V diskuzi se zabýváme možnými příčinami našich výsledků, uvádíme limity naší práce a také možné alternativy navazujících výzkumů v rámci námi zkoumané oblasti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis aims to study the issue of creativity in younger school-age children with specific learning disabilities. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on a comprehensive description of the problem of dyslexia. It presents some theories that give the direction of looking at the phenomenon of specific reading disorders. Furthermore, it deals with creativity, which is significantly related to reading disorders (according to current knowledge). It also looks for the possibilities of identifying these children. The empirical part includes descriptive, exploratory, and statistical processing of data obtained through the diagnostic tool T-59, the Torrance Figural Test of Creative Thinking, administered to a research sample of 65 dyslexic and 77 non-clinical children aged 6-12 years. The empirical part of the thesis also examines the relationship between originality (one form of divergent thinking) and an artificially constructed verbal score as it tries to catch the potential of using the T-59 as a tool for measuring verbal creativity. The data and the resulting facts do not support the evidence of significantly higher levels of figural creativity in the dyslexic population in any of the four forms of divergent thinking captured by the T-59. The overall results for the level of figural creativity differ very little between the two groups (in all four areas of divergent thinking, the non-clinical population outperforms their dyslexic counterparts negligibly). We found a moderate, significant relationship between the level of the artificial verbal score and originality, one form of divergent thinking, in pursuit of the potential for using the T-59 as verbal creativity measuring method. In the discussion, we address possible reasons for our results, present limitations of our work, and suggest possible alternatives for follow-up research within our study area.
