Thermoregulatory behavior of the Fire salamander larvae

Abstract:

Behaviorální termoregulace je důležitou složkou termálních strategií, které studenokrevní živočichové (ektotermové) využívají k vyrovnání se s časoprostorovou proměnlivostí teplotního prostředí. Někteří studenokrevní živočichové si udržují relativně vysoké a stabilní tělesné teploty, zatímco jiní zůstávají pasivní k jejich teplotnímu prostředí (termokonformita). Většina termoregulačních studií byla realizována na druzích žijících na teplotně příznivých stanovištích, což komplikuje pochopení termoregulačně-konformního kontinua. Potřeba nových empirických dat od ektotermů vystavených teplotně náročným podmínkám vyžaduje zhodnocení dostupných metod pro kvantifikaci termoregulačních strategií za teplotních omezení. Tato práce má za cíl (1) zhodnotit použitelnost různých termoregulačních indexů vypočítaných z tělesných teplot v terénu, operativních teplot a preferovaných tělesných teplot a (2) změřit behaviorální termoregulaci u larev mloka, Salamandra salamandra, které se vyvíjejí ve dvou teplotně náročných stanovištích, lesní tůni a studánce. Teploty vody ve studánce byly nižší a méně proměnlivé než v tůni a na obou stanovištích nedosahovaly rozpětí preferovaných tělesných teplot larev mloků. Na rozdíl od dobrých termoregulačních schopností larev v laboratorním termálním gradientu, tělesné teploty v terénu se rovnaly průměru a rozpětí operativních teplot, což ukazuje termální pasivitu larev na obou stanovištích. Navzdory zjevné termokonformitě, termoregulační indexy se měnily od aktivní termoregulace po termokonformitu a dokonce i vyhýbání preferovaným teplotám, což ukazuje na jejich omezenou použitelnost za teplotně omezujících podmínek. Larvy mloků opustily behaviorální termoregulaci, navzdory různým příležitostem zvýšit svou tělesnou teplotu nad průměrnou teplotu vody. Termokonformita představuje favorizovanou strategii u těchto ektotermů žijících v teplotně mnohem drsnějším prostředí než dosud zkoumané druhy. Měření termoregulačních strategií za teplotně limitujících podmínek je problematické a vyhnutí se zavádějícím výsledkům vyžaduje pečlivý výběr vhodného metodického přístupu.

Abstract:

Behavioral thermoregulation is an important component of thermal strategies, which cold-blooded animals (ectotherms) use to cope with spatiotemporal variation in thermal environment. Some ectotehrms maintain relatively high and stable body temperatures, while others remain passive to their thermal environment (thermoconformity). Most thermoregulatory studies were realized on species living in thermally benign habitats, which complicate understanding the thermoregulation-thermoconformity continuum. The need for new empirical data from ectotherms exposed to thermally challenging conditions requires the evaluation of available methods for quantifying thermoregulatory strategies under thermal constraints. This thesis aims to evaluate the applicability of various thermoregulatory indices calculated from field body temperatures, operative temperatures, and preferred body temperatures, and to quantify behavioral thermoregulation in salamander larvae, Salamandra salamandra, which develop in two thermally challenging habitats, forest pool and well. Water temperatures in the well were lower and less variable than in the pool and did not reach the preferred body temperature range of salamander larvae in both water bodies. In contrast to their good thermoregulatory abilities in the laboratory thermal gradient, field body temperatures matched mean and the range of operative temperatures showing thermal passivity of larvae in both habitats. Despite apparent thermoconformity, thermoregulatory indices varied from active thermoregulation, to thermoconformity, and even thermal evasion, which indicates their limited applicability under thermally-constrained conditions. Salamander larvae abandoned behavioral thermoregulation despite varying opportunities to increase their body temperature above average water temperatures. Thermoconformity represents a favored strategy in these ectotherms living in thermally much harsher environment than those examined to date. The quantification of thermoregulatory strategies under thermally-constrained conditions is problematic and requires the careful choice of appropriate methodological approach to avoid misleading results.
