Hubert Knoblauch and his approach towards sociology of religion

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem předložené práce je představit německého sociologa Huberta Knoblaucha a jeho koncepci populárního náboženství. Záměrem je zprostředkovat doposud málo známé informace z jeho děl. Hubert Knoblauch se zaměřuje na oblast náboženství v kontextu moderní společnosti. Práce komparuje Knoblauchův koncept populárního náboženství s koncepcí neviditelného náboženství Thomase Luckmanna. Hubert Knoblauch redefinuje Luckmannův koncept neviditelného náboženství tak, že Luckmannovo neviditelné náboženství se v kontextu současné společnosti stává viditelným a to prostřednictvím populární kultury. Akcentuje zejména fenomén spirituality a transcendence. Knoblauch chápe spiritualitu jako formu náboženského přesvědčení, ale nikoli jako formu náboženství, která není odkázána na náboženské instituce. Transcendenci vnímá Knoblauch jako součást spirituality. Transcendence má v současné společnosti podobu zkušenosti, konkrétního zážitku. Transcendenci a spiritualitu se Knoblauch snaží propojit a to prostřednictvím nového konceptu populárního náboženství. To vychází ze současného pojetí populární kultury, která není přesně definována a zároveň je propojena s každodenními zkušenostmi.

Abstract:

The main theme of my bachelors thesis is the phenomenon of religion in the postmodern society as presented by Hubert Knoblauch. A comparison is made between the works of Hubert Knoblauch (Popular Religion) and Thomas Luckmann (Invisible Religion) in order to determine the relationship and the degree of similarity between the two concepts. The main emphasis is given to the work of Hubert Knoblauch and his consideration of the phenomenon of modern religion. The progress of Knoblauchs reasoning about and position towards religion is mapped based on the analysis of his key works. The aim of the work is to define how and why the author used terms like Popular Religion, privatization of religion or spirituality. In his work, Hubert Knoblauch tries to point out that the notion of invisible religion is deficient from todays point of view. He understands Popular Religion as a new religiousness and a new spirituality. Both of his concepts of popularity and religion pick up from Luckmanns sociology of religion, which is, however, being remodeled and shifted forward towards some of the most outstanding religious phenomena of todays society.
