Mental imagery and state anxiety after height exposure in virtual reality – the role of the presence and embodiment

Abstract:

Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology which, throughout the last couple of years, has been attracting attention not only of several mainstream consumers, but also researchers in the field of psychology, who have begun to explore different directions for use in the therapy of phobias. Acrophobia is a strong, irrational fear of heights and has the highest prevalence among other specific phobias characterized by natural environments. Exposure in VR represents a promising KBT technique in which an individual is exposed to a feared stimulus in a virtual environment. In this experimental study, working with the correlational analysis we mapped VR exposure in a height environment in people with a moderate fear of heights. Thirty-six participants were exposed to a height situation in the Richie's Plank Experience app and were instructed to walk around a virtual plank that also had its exact equivalent in the physical environment of the lab. Throughout the session, the participant's heart rate was measured. The main aim of this study was to find associations between state anxiety and feelings of presence and embodiment that influence the virtual experience. Furthermore, the study focused on the relationship between the sense of presence and the sense of embodiment within the VR exposure. The possible association between the vividness of mental imagery and state anxiety was also investigated. We discovered a statistically significant relationship between state anxiety and the virtual body ownership subscale of the embodiment questionnaire. We were also able to approximate the association of the components of sense of presence and sense of embodiment through correlations. Although not all presented hypotheses were confirmed and the pandemic situation severely limited the number of participants, we believe that our research has benefits for future research in several ways. Thus, establishing the link between embodiment and state anxiety may be the next step toward maximizing the effectiveness of VR exposure therapy, identifying the most optimal setting and, last but not least, exploring the possibility of influencing the level of vividness of the imagination.

Abstract:

Virtuálna realita (VR) je technológia, ktorá v posledných rokoch prilákala pozornosť nie len množstva bežných spotrebiteľov, ale aj výskumníkov z oblasti psychológie, ktorí začali skúmať rozličné smery využitia v terapii fóbií. Akrofóbia je silný, iracionálny strach z výšok a má najväčšiu prevalenciu spomedzi iných špecifických fóbií charakterizovanými prírodným prostredím. Expozícia vo VR predstavuje sľubnú KBT techniku, pri ktorej je jedinec vystavený obávanému podnetu vo virtuálnom prostredí. V tejto experimentálnej štúdii, ktorá pracuje s korelačnou analýzou, bola zmapovaná VR expozícia vo výškovom prostredí u ľudí so stredným strachom z výšok. 36 participantov bolo vystavených výškovej situácii v aplikácii Richie´s Plank Experience a ich úlohou bolo prejsť sa po virtuálnej doske, ktorá mala aj svoj presný ekvivalent vo fyzickom prostredí laboratória. Počas celého stretnutia bola participantom meraná srdcová frekvencia. Hlavným cieľom tejto štúdie bolo nájsť súvislosti medzi stavovou úzkosťou a pocitmi prítomnosti a stelesnenia, ktoré ovplyvňujú virtuálny zážitok. Ďalej bola štúdia zameraná na vzťah pocitu prítomnosti a pocitu stelesnenia v rámci VR expozície. Predmetom skúmania bola aj možná súvislosť živosti mentálnej predstavivosti a stavovej úzkosti. Objavili sme štatisticky významný vzťah stavovej úzkosti a subškály zameranej na vlastníctvo virtuálneho tela z dotazníka stelesnenia. Zároveň sa nám podarilo priblížiť spojenie komponentov pocitu prítomnosti a pocitu stelesnenia skrz korelácie. Aj napriek tomu, že neboli potvrdené všetky prezentované hypotézy a pandemická situácia značne obmedzila počet participantov, veríme, že náš výskum má prínos pre budúce skúmanie vo viacerých smeroch. Zistenie prepojenia stelesnenia a stavovej úzkosti môže byť teda ďalším krokom k maximalizovaniu efektivity VR expozičnej terapie, zisteniu najoptimálnejšieho nastavenia a napokon preskúmaniu možnosti ovplyvnenia úrovňou živosti predstavivosti.
