Wind and snow interactions within the semi-arid environment of James Ross Island, Antarctica

Abstract:

Cílem této disertační práce je prozkoumat, jak spolu souvisí fungování eolických a periglaciálních procesů na Ostrově Jamese Rosse v Antarktidě. Práce je založená na čtyřech publikacích, které přinášejí nové náhledy na procesy spojené s redistribucí sněhu a sedimentů v rámci semiaridního prostředí poloostrova Ulu, nejsevernější části Ostrova Jamese Rosse a zároveň největší odledněné oblasti v regionu Antarktického poloostrova. Eolické procesy jsou prominentním reliéfotvorným faktorem na poloostrově Ulu z důvodu absence vegetace a obecného nedostatku vláhy v půdě. Silné větry jsou schopné efektivně transportovat jemné částice sedimentu a sníh, zatímco jejich akumulace je ovlivněna topografií. Velké akumulace sněhu obvykle vznikají na návětrných a závětrných stranách překážek nebo v terénních depresích. Mezi cíle této práce patří identifikace vzorců akumulace sněhu založená na analýze převládajících směrů větru, měření efektivity těchto akumulací v zachytávání jemných větrem unášených částic, kvantifikace jejich vlivu na teplotní režim půdy a diskuze role sněhu v širším kontextu vývoje reliéfu. Hlavními použitými metodami byla časoprostorová analýza tvorby sněhových akumulací založené na satelitních datech; přístrojové měření půdních teplot, směru větru a výšky sněhu; průzkum za použití bezpilotního systému; sběr vzorků sněhu a regolitu; a geomorfologické mapování. Získané výsledky prokázaly významný vliv velkých a dlouhotrvajících sněhových akumulací na teplotní režim půdy hlavně tam, kde bylo akumulováno více než 50 cm sněhu. Zároveň i relativně tenká vrstva sněhu vyskytující se v průběhu vrcholného léta způsobila ztenčení nebo i úplné zamrznutí aktivní vrstvy a snížení teploty půdy. Bylo zjištěno, že míra eolické depozice závisí na existenci zdroje materiálu. Přítomnost jemného eolického sedimentu a tavné vody ze sněhu dále sehrávají důležitou roli při kolonizaci místní biotou, jako jsou mechy a lišejníky.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the interplay between aeolian and periglacial processes on James Ross Island, Antarctica. The four published papers presented here bring novel insights into the functioning of the processes connected with the redistribution of snow and material within the semi-arid landscape of Ulu Peninsula, the northernmost part of James Ross Island and the largest ice-free area within the region of the Antarctic Peninsula. Aeolian processes are a prominent landscape-shaping factor on Ulu Peninsula, due to the absence of vegetation and a general lack of moisture within the ground. Strong winds are capable of efficiently transporting the fine particles and snow, while the accumulation is topographically controlled. Large snow accumulations are usually found on the windward and lee sides of obstacles or in terrain depressions. The objectives of this thesis were to identify the patterns of snow accumulation based on prevailing winds, measure the efficiency of these accumulations in trapping fine wind-blown particles, quantify their effect on the ground thermal regime and discuss the role of snow within the wider context of the shaping of the landscape. Principal methods used to achieve these goals were the observation of snow cover patterns using satellite imagery; instrumental measurements of ground temperature, wind direction and snow depth; UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) survey; snow and regolith sample collection; and geomorphological mapping. The results show that large and persistent snow accumulations significantly affect the ground thermal regime especially in the areas where more than 50 cm of snow were accumulated. However, even a relatively thin snow cover occurring during the height of summer was capable of causing a thinning or even complete refreezing of the active layer and reducing ground temperature. The rate of aeolian deposition was found to be dependent on the existence of the source area. The presence of fine aeolian sediment and meltwater from snow further play a significant role for the colonisation by biota, such as mosses and lichens.
