Study of phosphates from magnesite-serpentine deposits in Modum area, Norway.

Abstract:

Magnezito-serpentinová ložiska Overntjern a Tingelstadtjern se vyznačují unikátní paragenezí Mg fosfátů – althausitu, holtedahlitu, heneuiteu, raadeitu, collinsitu. Diplomová práce se zabývá detailním studiem těchto minerálů. Texturní vztahy fosfátů ukazují, že althausit a heneuit jsou primárními minerály. Ostatní fosfáty vznikly později a althausit zatlačují. Na lokalitě Overntjern je althausit hlavním minerálem a je zde v asociaci s collinsitem a F bohatým hydroxylapatitem. Althausit se vyznačuje zvýšenými koncentracemi As, které způsobuje jeho zonalitu. Na lokalitě Tingelstadtjern je zastoupený méně a jeho asociujícími minerály jsou holtedahlit, raadeit a heneuit. Dále byla zjištěna variabilita F v althausitu s nižšími obsahy v Overntjernu a vyššími na lokalitě Tingelstadtjern. Velmi nízká koncentrace F v původním magmatu umožnila vznik althausitu namísto wagneritu. Byl naměřen zvýšený obsah vzácných zemin, které se koncentrují v apatitu, monazitu a xenotimu. Díky zvýšenému obsahu Th v primárním monazitu bylo možné chemickým datováním určit stáří mineralizace na 1051 ± 26 Ma. Na lokalitě Overntjern byla objevena neznámá Mg-Ca-P fáze v asociaci s althausitem s obsahy dominujících prvků v poměru 1 Mg : 4 Ca : 3 P, která zatím nebyla popsána.

Abstract:

Magnezite-serpentine deposits at Overntjern and Tingelstadtjern are characterized by a unique assemblage of Mg phosphates - althausite, holtedahlite, heneuite, raadeite, and collinsite. The thesis focuses on a detailed study of these minerals. Texture relationships of the phosphates indicate that althausite and heneuite are of primary origin. The other phosphates formed later and partially overprint althausite. At the Overntjern site, althausite is the main mineral, occurring in association with collinsite and F-rich hydroxylapatite. It exhibits elevated concentrations of As, causing its zonation. At the Tingelstadtjern deposit, althausite is less abundant and its associated minerals are holtedahlite, raadeite, and heneuite. Variability of F content in althausite was observed, with lower contents at Overntjern and higher at Tingelstadtjern. The very low F concentration in the original magma led to the formation of althausite instead of wagnerite. Increased concentrations of rare earth elements were measured, which are incorporated in apatite, monazite, and xenotime. The elevated Th content in primary monazite enabled the determination of the age of mineralization through chemical dating, yielding an age of 1051 ± 26 Ma. At Overntjern, an unknown Mg-Ca-P phase was discovered in association with althausite, with dominant element ratios of 1 Mg: 4 Ca: 3 P. This could potentially be a new mineral.
