The influence of mood and other psychological factors on sports betting behaviour

Abstract:

Many decisions in everyday life involve some degree of risk, and the importance of these decisions for personal and societal well-being caused a significant amount of relevant research, which showed, that mood can influence the tendency to risk by altering probability estimation, judgment, use of processing style, or impulsive tendencies. This study tests the mood-risk relations as predicted by the Feelings-as-information theory, the mood maintenance hypothesis, and the ego-depletion hypothesis. The study used a real sports betting context to maximalise its ecological validity. To uncover additional factors, personality measures were studied, for example urgency, which is the tendency to react impulsively while being in more intense affective states. Additionally, the amount of daily sunshine was studied, because many field studies use sunshine-related data as a substitute for direct measures of mood. The study was conducted in an operational sports betting agency, within which 28 subjects participated, who provided 2253 wagering tickets during 39 days. The predicted relationships between the daily moods of participants and their tendency to risk, operationalised as the amount of wagering, were not found, so the theories which predicted them were not supported. Neither was found the effect of urgency on these relationships. However, there was a significant positive relationship between the tendency to bet and the mean mood of participants over the whole course of the study, and between the tendency to bet and the amount of daily sunshine. The results are discussed with the consideration of relevant theory and the limitations of the present study.

Mnohé rozhodnutia v živote ľudí zahŕňajú riziko, a kvôli dôležitosti týchto rozhodnutí pre osobné a spoločenské dobro sa tejto téme venovalo množstvo štúdií, ktoré okrem iného preukázali, že nálada môže tendenciu riskovať ovplyvniť skrz zmenu v odhade pravdepodobnosti, úsudku, použití kognitívneho štýlu, alebo miere reagovať impulzívne. Táto štúdia testuje predikcie teórie Pocity-ako-informácie, hypotézy udržiavania nálady, a hypotézy kognitívneho vyčerpania, ktoré sa k tomuto vplyvu nálady vyjadrujú, pričom výskum prebiehal v kontexte reálneho športového stávkovania kvôli maximalizácii ekologickej validity. Pre odhalenie potenciálnych moderujúcich faktorov bola skúmaná aj úloha osobnostných charakteristík, napríklad urgencie, čiže dispozičnej tendencie reagovať impulzívne počas afektívnych stavov. Skúmaný bol aj vplyv slnečnosti dní, ktorej mieru mnoho štúdií používa ako náhradu priameho merania nálady. Výskum prebiehal v zabehnutej stávkovej kancelárii a zúčastnilo sa ho 28 klientov, od ktorých sa počas 39 dní vyzbieralo 2253 stávok. Zistilo sa, že medzi dennou náladou účastníkov a ich mierou stávkovania, čiže tendencie riskovať, neboli nájdené predikované vzťahy, a žiadna z vyššie uvedených teórií nebola podporená. Predikovaný vplyv urgencie na tieto vzťahy taktiež nebol nájdený. Pozitívny vzťah sa ale našiel medzi priemernou náladou účastníkov za celé obdobie a stávkovaním, a medzi oblačnosťou dní a stávkovaním. Tieto výsledky sú diskutované v rámci teoretických súvislostí a limitácií tejto štúdie.
