Classicism versus Modernisn: An Analysis of the Sociolinguistic Problems of the Contemporary Sinhala Language as regards its Diglossia

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat sociolingvistické problémy soudobého sinhálského jazyka, zvláště pak všudypřítomný problém diglosie. Diglosijní situace má historické pozadí už od nejstarších dob, kdy se začínaly vyvíjet mluvní a psané normy každá po vlastní trajektorii. Zatímco jak progresivní, tak i konzervativní tendence byly od začátku přítomné, v době národního obrození převážily tendence konzervativní. To je zřejmé z pokusu Kumaratungy, který založil soudobou gramatickou normu na normě z dvanáctého století. Ve stejné době KUmaratunga a hnutí Hela Havula prohlašovaly názor, že „mluvená sinhálština je negramatická“ a to se vrylo do sinhálské společnosti a mnoho Sinhálců tomu věří dodnes. Kumaratunga se pokusil gramatikalizovat mluvenou sinhálštinu zavedením nové gramatiky, která je odlišná jak od mluveného jazyka tak i od gramatiky mluveného jazyka. Ve výsledku mnoho vzdělaných mluvčích užívá ve formálních hovorech tuto novou gramatiku, což ve výsledku vytvořilo sinhálskou triglosii. Diglosijní situace se prohloubila, když byla zavedena nová lingvistická norma, která akceptovala fakt, že i mluvený jazyk má svou gramatiku. Cílem této disertace je analyzovat jazykové variety, které jsou užívány v akademických, osobních i mediálních diskursech. Tyto různé variety byly v hovorové sinhálštině vytvořeny jako výsledek právě diglosijní situace. Zároveň v mluvené sinhálštině vznikly různé variety jako výsledek obecně známé představy, že „mluvená sinhálština je negramatická“. V této studii se pozornost věnuje i podstatným historickým detailům vztahujícím se k tématu práce.

Doctoral Thesis CLASSICISM VERSUS MODERNISM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC PROBLEMS OF THE CONTEMPORARY SINHALA LANGUAGE AS REGARDS ITS DIGLOSSIA The objective of this thesis is the study of sociolinguistic problems of contemporary Sinhala language, particularly the pervasive problem of diglossia. The diglossic situation had historical underpinnings beginning from the earliest times when literary norms and spoken norms were developing in divergent ways. While both progressive and conservative tendencies were always there, in the revivalist stage the conservative tendency took an upper hand. This is evident in the attempt of Kumaratunga who developed grammatical norm for the present period based on the 12th Century norm. At the same time, Kumaratunga and ‘Hela Havula’ movement promulgated an idea that ‘spoken Sinhala usage is ungrammatical’ and this became engraved in Sinhala society and many Sinhalese still believe it. Kumaratunga tried to grammaticalize spoken Sinhala by introducing new grammar, which is different from spoken and written grammar. As a result of this, many educated people tend to use this new grammar for formal speaking. This situation created a triglossic situation in Sinhala. The diglossic situation got aggravated when the modern linguistic norm was introduced, which took recognition of the fact that spoken language also has a grammar. The aim of this dissertation is analyzing the different language varieties which are used in academic, personal, and medial discourses. These different varieties have been created in written Sinhala due to a diglossic situation. Simultaneously, different varieties have been created in spoken Sinhala as a result of a well-known idea that ‘spoken Sinhala usage is ungrammatical’ as well as some social issues. In the course of this study, substantial historical details are given to substantiate various issues involved.
