The impact of anxiety level on body image in elite athletes

Abstract:

Předložená bakalářská diplomová práce mapuje vztah úzkostnosti a body image u vrcholových sportovců a dále prozkoumává vztah úzkostnosti a času věnovanému sportovním aktivitám. Výzkum byl proveden formou explorativní kvantitativní korelační studie a data byla sbírána pomocí jednorázového online dotazníkového šetření. Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo celkem 108 elitních sportovců (M = 57, Ž = 51) ve věku od 16 do 44 let (M = 21.1, SD = 3.88). Body image byl měřen na škále Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire – Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) a míra úzkostnosti pomocí škály State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T). Výsledky potvrdily předpokládaný vztah úzkostnosti a některých škál body image: hodnocení vzhledu, orientace na vzhled, spokojenost s různými částmi těla a znepokojení nadváhou. Úzkostnost byla u mužů spojena s časem stráveným tréninky primární sportovní disciplíny, u žen byl zase nalezen vztah mezi úzkostností a časem věnovaným fyzické aktivitě nad rámec oficiálních tréninků primárního sportu. Zjištění předkládané práce souhlasí s odbornou literaturou a relevantními výzkumy dané oblasti a mají potenciál aplikovatelnosti v oblasti trenérství a vrcholového sportu.

Abstract:

The present bachelor thesis maps the relationship between anxiety and body image in elite athletes and further explores the relationship between anxiety and time spent on sport activities. The research was conducted in the form of an exploratory quantitative correlational study and data was collected using a one-time online questionnaire survey. The research sample consisted of a total of 108 elite athletes (M = 57, F = 51) aged between 16 to 44 (M = 21.1, SD = 3.88). Body image was measured using the Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) and anxiety levels were measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T). Results confirmed the hypothesized relationship between anxiety and several body images scales: appearance evaluation, appearance orientation, body areas satisfaction scale, and overweight preoccupation. In men, anxiety was associated with time spent training in the primary sport discipline, whereas in women a relationship was found between anxiety and time spent in physical activity beyond formal training in the primary sport. The findings of the present study are in agreement with the literature and relevant research in the field and have potential applicability in coaching and elite sport.
