The use of the passive voice in English fiction

Abstract:

The use of passive voice in fiction has been the subject of much debate among literary scholars and writers. Although the formal aspect of the English passive voice has been closely studied, there has been relatively little research on the function or use of passive voice outside of academic or formal writing. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts and aims to explore the distribution of passives in fiction. In the theoretical section, the concept of "genus verbi" is discussed, and the function, formation, and typology of English passives are explained. An important factor in passive voice is the presence or absence of the agent, which is also included. This section serves as a strong theoretical basis for the analysis. The analysis itself is based on a corpus of passive constructions found on the first 200 pages of the novel Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery and published in 1908. The analysis focuses on the examination of several aspects of passive constructions. These aspects include the formation of the passive construction, the type of passive construction, the presence of modal verbs and tense within the construction, as well as the presence or absence of the agent in the sentence. The results of the analysis are summarised at the end of my work.

Použití trpného rodu v beletrii je předmětem mnoha debat mezi literárními vědci a spisovateli. Ačkoli formální stránka anglického trpného rodu byla podrobně studována, bylo provedeno relativně málo výzkumu o funkci nebo použití trpného rodu mimo akademické nebo formální psaní. Tato práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část a jejím cílem je prozkoumat distribuci pasiv v beletrii. V teoretické části je diskutován pojem "genus verbi" a je vysvětlena funkce, tvorba a typologie anglických pasiv podle funkce a významu sloves. Důležitým faktorem trpného rodu je přítomnost nebo nepřítomnost konatele, který je také zahrnut. Tato část slouží jako teoretický základ pro analýzu. Samotná analýza je založena na korpusu pasivních konstrukcí, nalezených na prvních 200 stranách románu Anne of Green Gables, který napsala Lucy Maud Montgomery a který byl publikován v roce 1908. Analýza se soustředí na zkoumání několika aspektů pasivních konstrukcí. Mezi tyto patří forma pasivní konstrukce, typ použité pasivní konstrukce, přítomnost modálních sloves a použitý čas, stejně jako přítomnost či nepřítomnost konatele ve větě. Výsledky analýzy jsou shrnuty v závěru mé práce.
