Alejo Carpentier and music: analysis of musical motifs in The Lost Steps

Abstract:

The principal aim of the thesis is to analyse the musical motifs in one of the most important works of a Cuban writer of the 20th century Alejo Carpentier called The Lost Steps. The thesis mentions author?s live and work, focuses also on the union between music and literature as two different streams of art and on a theoretical and later practical level deals with music produced by musical instruments and also with the music of the surroudings. The second part of the thesis summarizes the plot of The Lost Steps and various motifs which appear in this significant work. The thesis also analyses the music which is one of the main elements, mentions allusions to important composers and musicians and also musical terminology which is present in the novel.

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem práce je provést analýzu hudebních motivů objevujících se v jednom z nejdůležitějších děl kubánského spisovatele 20. století Aleja Carpentiera s názvem Ztracené kroky. Práce mimo jiné zmiňuje autorův život a dílo, dále se zaměřuje na vztah mezi hudbou a literaturou jako dvěma odlišnými uměleckými proudy a na úrovni teoretické a později i praktické se zaobírá hudbou vyluzovanou hudebními nástroji a také hudbou okolí. Druhá část práce shrnuje děj Ztracených kroků a různé motivy, jež se v tomto významném díle nacházejí. Dále analyzuje hudbu, která je jedním z hlavních motivů, zaobírá se narážkami na důležité skladatele a hudebníky a hudebními termíny, které se v novele nacházejí.
