The perception of mental illness by the society from the perspective of the persons with mental illness

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou vnímání duševního onemocnění společností z pohledu lidí, kteří trpí nějakou formou duševní poruchy. Teoretická část práce je zaměřena na vysvětlení pojmu duševní nemoc skrze několik vědních oborů a současně vymezuje i jeho historické chápání. Dále podrobně rozebírá koncept vnímání, prostřednictvím něhož si utváříme obraz sami o sobě i druhých lidech, a také společnost, které jsme součástí a jež do značné míry ovlivňuje lidské chování. Pro výzkum byla zvolena kvalitativní výzkumná strategie, konkrétně pak polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Rozhovorů se účastnilo 8 informantů s určitým typem duševní nemoci. Získaná kvalitativní data byla analyzována pomocí zakotvené teorie, resp. otevřeného kódování. Závěr práce je věnován odpovědi na hlavní výzkumnou otázku a předložení doporučení pro praxi.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis concerns with the question of perception of mental illness by the society from the perspective of the people who are suffering from any kind of mental illness. The theoretical part of this thesis is focused on the explanation of the term “mental illness” through several science disciplines and at the same time it delimits its historical perception. Further it examines the concept of perception, through which we create our image of ourselves and other people, and the society we are part of and which affects the human behavior to a large extent. For the research the qualitative research strategy, specifically the semi-structured dialogue, has been chosen. Eight informants with specific mental illness participated in the dialogues. The gathered qualitative data were analyzed by the anchored theory, respectively by the theory of open coding. The conclusion of the thesis concerns with the answer to the main research question and with the submitting of recommendation for the practical applications.
