Breasts: public and private. On the ambivalence of public breastfeeding

Abstract:

Breasts as a body part are filled with meanings that exist on a continuum, even though we wish to think about them as exclusive. Breastfeeding as an act that pulls the breast out of its aesthetic existence, which is typical for it in public space, uses it in ways that are not acceptable, and crosses the boundaries between the motherly and the sexual. When women breastfeed in public, they claim the public space through their specific female embodiment and deny the ideal of the male citizen. However citizenship can be understood and a sense of belonging, created through the everyday use of space. Thus, if women are being pushed out of the public space when breastfeeding, their citizenship is being limited. Breastfeeding should therefore be understood as an act of intimate citizenship, simultaneously private and public, created in context not based on its position in space, through which women can claim and be able to care for their children and use the public space without being forced to accommodate the norm of the male embodiment.

Abstract:

Verejné dojčenie vyvoláva ambivalentné pocity, pretože prsník ako časť tela je zaťažený významami, ktoré existujú na kontinuu, napriek tomu, že o nich chceme rozmýšlať ako o exluzívnych. Dojčenie ako akt, ktorý vytrháva prsník z estetickej existencie, ktorá je preň typická vo verjenom priestore, ho používa spôsobmi, ktoré na verejnosti nie sú prípustné a prekračuje hranice medzi materským a sexuálnym. Ak ženy dojčia vo verejnom priestore nárokujú si ho cez špecifické ženské stelesnenie a popierajú tak ideál mužského občana. Avšak občianstvo je možné chápať ako pocit prináležitosti, ktorý sa vytvára každodenným užívaním priestoru. Ak sú ženy z verejného priestoru kvôli dojčeniu vytlačované, ich občianstvo je obmedzované. Dojčenie je preto nutné chápať ako akt intímneho občianstva, sukromný aj verejný zároveň, ktorý utvára kontext a nie poloha v priestore, a ktorý znamená nárok a schopnosť žien starať sa o svoje deti a používať verejný priestor bez toho, aby sa museli prispôsobovať norme mužského stelesnenia.
