Abstract:

The thesis entitled Name, city, object: transformation of urban planning, urban sociology, and the case of (post)socialist Brno opens three main sets of issues. In the first part, in order to answer the question why urban planning has seldom appeared as subject of research in urban sociology, I propose an exposition on the relationship formed in history between the disciplines of urban planning and urban sociology, and an overview of approaches to study urban planning within the contemporary interdisciplinary urban studies. Next, on the basis of a critical résumé of the academic perspectives on urban planning as a sphere of knowledge, the thesis defines as vital the issue of transformation of urban planning in relation to social change and the problems in theorizing and researching this relation. The last chapters bring the topic of urban planning transformation to the context of (post)socialist cities. I try to argue for researching urban planning through analysis and comparison of the urban development concept documents. The examination of three planning concepts prepared for the city of Brno in 1951, 1966, 1973, 2002, and 2007 represent an example pointing out the potential of the analysis of the texts resulting from the process of conceptual planning to help understanding the planning as a sphere of knowledge and its core ideas, as well as the processes of their transformation. Focusing on comparison of the documents published during socialism and after its collapse in the Czech Republic, it also challenges the existing findings about urban planning under (post)socialism in the cities of the Central and Eastern Europe.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca Meno, mesto, vec: premeny urbánneho plánovania, sociológia mesta a prípad (post)socialistického Brna postupne otvára tri okruhy otázok. V prvej časti prostredníctvom výkladu historického prepojenia disciplíny mestského plánovania a sociológie mesta objasňuje, prečo sa plánovanie málokedy stáva/lo predmetom sociologického skúmania, a predstavuje prístupy k jeho poznávaniu v rámci súčasných interdisciplinárnych urbánnych štúdií. Na základe kritického zhrnutia východísk prác, ktoré mestské plánovanie vymedzujú ako oblasť poznania, následne odhaľuje ako kľúčovú otázku vzťahu premien mestského plánovania a sociálnej zmeny a problémy v prístupoch ku skúmaniu tohto prepojenia. Posledná časť práce otvára tému premeny urbánneho plánovania v prípade (post)socialistických miest a navrhuje spôsob jej skúmania prostredníctvom analýzy a porovnania koncepčných plánovacích dokumentov. Štúdium piatich plánovacích koncepcií pripravených pre mesto Brno v rokoch 1951, 1966, 1973, 2002 a 2007 predstavuje príklad, ktorý umožňuje ukázať potenciál práce s textami tvorenými v procese plánovania pre porozumenie tejto oblasti poznania, jej základných ideí a ich premien. Zameraním sa na porovnanie dokumentov vytvorených za socializmu a po ňom zároveň problematizuje doterajšie poznatky o plánovaní miest v (post)socializme v mestách v strednej a východnej Európy.
