When will this fearful slumber have an end?": Dramatic Roles of Sleep and Dream in Shakespeare's Plays

Abstract:

The present master's thesis discusses the use of sleep and dream in Shakespeare's drama and the dramatic roles which they fulfil. The study examines the dramas from a contemporary Renaissance perpective, that is, from the perspective of what was known and understood at the time by contemporary humanists, scientists and thinkers, as well as from the perspective of the contemporary literary and cultural situation, that is, how the uses of various motifs were understood by contemporary dramatists and audiences. It mainly focuses on three kinds of use of the discussed motifs: (1) the dream prophecy and its role in the dramatic composition of a play; (2) sleep and dream as a characterization device; and (3) the affiliation of sleep and death and the fashion in which their relationship contributes to the dramatic structure of a play and its atmosphere. The histories of various views of sleep and dream phenomena are also outlined - from Classical Antiquity to the Renaissance in contemporary social, philosophical, theological and literary contexts. Such views helped to create the cultural discourse in which Shakespeare's plays were written and staged for the first time

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá užitím motivu spánku a snu v Shakespearově dramatu a dramatickými rolemi, které v něm plní. Práce zkoumá dramata z hlediska humanistického stavu vědeckého poznání a soudobé kulturní tradice. Zevrubně popisuje zejména tři oblasti dramatického užití těchto motivů: snové proroctví a jeho roli v dramatické výstavbě díla, sen a spánek coby charakterizační prostředek a spojení spánku a smrti a způsob, jak se jejich vztah podílí na dramatické struktuře hry a její atmosféře. Zároveň jsou nastíněny dějiny vnímání snu a spánku od antiky po humanismus v dobových společenských, filozofických, náboženských a literárních kontextech, jež spoluvytvářely kulturní diskurz, v němž Shakespearova díla vznikala a byla poprvé uváděna
