Smart power of the Russian federation in the context of the Syrian crisis

Abstract:

Práce na téma “Smart power Ruské federace v kontextu syrské krize” zkoumá přístup Ruské federace v syrské krizi a objasňuje koncept smart power, který popsal J. S. Nye. Smart power je podle něj schopností kombinovat hard a soft power a vytvořit tak vítěznou strategii. Každý prvek smart power je podrobně popsán v první kapitole. Ve druhé kapitole bude tento koncept aplikován na Rusko a budou popsány jeho zdroje soft power, jimiž jsou převážně kultura. Hlavním cílem této práce je najít odpověď na otázku, zda politika Ruska během syrské krize odpovídá konceptu smart power. Práce dochází k závěru, že Rusko nerozumí, co přesně představuje soft power. Její politika během syrské krize proto nebyla v souladu se smart power, protože existovala nerovnováha mezi hard a soft power.

Abstract:

The paper on "Smart power of the Russian Federation in the context of the Syrian crisis" examines the approach of the Russian Federation in the Syrian crisis and explains the concept of smart power described by J. S. Nye. Smart power according to him is the ability to combine hard and soft power to create a winning strategy. Each element of smart power is described in detail in the first chapter. In the second chapter this concept will be applied to Russia and there will be described its sources of soft power, which are mainly culture. The main aim of this thesis is to find an answer to the question whether Russia's policy during the Syrian crisis fits the concept of smart power. The thesis concludes that Russia does not understand what exactly soft power constitutes. Therefore, its policy during the Syrian crisis was not in line with smart power because there was an imbalance between hard and soft power.
