The influence of atmospheric circulation on temperature stratification in the Svalbard region

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce hodnotí vliv atmosférické cirkulace na teplotní zvrstvení mezní vrstvy atmosféry v zátoce Petuniabukta (souostroví Svalbard). Hypsometrické teplotní gradienty v zátoce Petuniabukta, spočtené na základě měření teploty v období 2009–2013, byly analyzovány v souvislosti s vybranými charakteristikami atmosférické cirkulace z reanalýzy ERA-Interim a s kalendářem cirkulačních typů pro ostrov Spitsbergen. Teplotní zvrstvení bylo ovlivněno teplotou vzduchu, geopotenciální výškou, rychlostí a směrem větru v tlakových hladinách 850 hPa, 925 hPa a 1000 hPa. Přestože výsledky byly obdobné pro oba datové soubory o atmosférické cirkulaci, dvě případové studie poukázaly na limity použití kalendáře cirkulačních typů.

Abstract:

In this master´s thesis the influence of atmospheric circulation on air temperature stratification in the boundary layer in Petunia Bay, Svalbard archipelago, has been evaluated. Near-surface temperature lapse rates in Petunia Bay, calculated on the basis of air temperature measurements in the period of 2009–2013, were analyzed in connection with chosen characteristics of atmospheric circulation from the ERA-Interim Reanalysis and the catalogue of circulation types above Spitsbergen Island. Thermal stratification was affected by air temperature, geopotential height, wind speed and wind direction at the 850hPa, 925hPa and 1000hPa pressure levels. In spite of similar results for both the atmospheric circulation datasets, two case studies revealed the limits of the catalogue of circulation types use.
