Forest management and its influence on bat habitat

Abstract:

První část této bakalářské práce obsahuje literární rešerši, která se věnuje problematice vlivu managementu lesních porostů na lesní netopýry a jejich biotopové požadavky. Praktiky lesního managementu, jako jsou holoseče, semenné seče, clonné seče, selekce skupin stromů i jednotlivých stromů a probírky, mohou mít značný dopad na úkryty netopýrů. Mohou ovlivňovat i dostupnost hmyzu v lesích. Tyto praktiky mění prostorovou strukturu vegetace, což může mít vliv na efektivitu letu lovících netopýrů. V práci je dále srovnáván stav netopýřích populací v lesích pod těmito managementovými praktikami. Cílem druhé části práce bylo zjistit rozdíly v aktivitě netopýrů mezi zásahovými a bezzásahovými porosty a dále mezi smrkovými a bukovými porosty v lesích Krkonošského národního parku. Ke zjištění letové aktivity a druhové diverzity společenstva netopýrů byl použit bat-detektoring, metoda bodová a metoda liniových transektů. Detektoring probíhal v červenci roku 2012 během osmi nocí na osmi lesních lokalitách. Čtyři lokality byly bezzásahové (dvě smrčiny, dvě bučiny) a další čtyři lokality byly zásahové (dvě smrčiny, dvě bučiny). Celkem bylo zaznamenáno 15 druhů netopýrů. Nebyly zjištěny žádné signifikantní rozdíly v aktivitě druhů mezi porosty s managementem a bez managementu a ani mezi smrčinami a bučinami. Zásahové porosty zřejmě netopýrům nabízely nejen vhodná loviště, ale i dostatek úkrytů. Tyto porosty preferovaly druhy M. mystacinus/brandtii, M. bechsteinii, P. auritus/austriacus, P. pipistrellus. Bezzásahové porosty nabízely více mohutných, poškozených a mrtvých stromů. Nesignifikantní, ale vyšší hodnoty aktivity některých druhů byly zaznamenány v bučinách, např. M. bechsteinii, N. leisleri a P. nathusii. Smrčiny byly tedy zřejmě pro netopýry méně atraktivní.

Abstract:

The first part of this Bachelor’s thesis includes a literature search which devotes to the problems of influence of forest management on bat in forests and their habitat requirements. Forest management practices, such as clearcutting, seed-tree cutting, shelterwood cutting, group tree selection as well as single tree selection and thinning, can have great impact on roosts of bats. It can also affect the availability of insect in forests. These practices alter the spatial vegetation structure which can have influence on the flight efficiency of hunting bats. This study also compares the status of bat populations in forests under introduced management practices. The aim of the second part of this study was to assess the differences in bat activity between managed and unmanaged stands and between spruce and beech stands in forests of Krkonoše National Park. To determinate the flying activity and species diversity of bat communities, point method and method of line transects of bat-detectoring were used. The bat detecting took place in July 2012 during the eight nights in the eight localities. Four localities were unmanaged (two spruce stands, two beech stands) and other four localities were managed (two spruce stands, two beech stands). In total, 15 bat species were recorded. There were no significant differences in species activity, neither between managed and unmanaged stands nor between spruce and beech stands. The managed stands likely offered to bats not only suitable foraging sites but also enough roosts. These stands were preferred by the species M. mystacinus/brandtii, M. bechsteinii, P. auritus/austriacus, P. pipistrellus. The unmanaged stands offered more large trees, damaged tress and snags. Non-significant but higher activity of some species in beech stands were recorded, e.g. M. bechsteinii, N. leisleri and P. nathusii. Therefore, the spruce stands look to be less attractive for bats.
