Kosovo as a fragile state

Abstract:

V únoru 2021 uplynulo již třináct let od okamžiku, kdy jihosrbská provincie Kosovo vyhlásila za pomoci mnoha významných aktérů mezinárodního společenství nezávislost. Díky úsilí svých politických představitelů nyní kráčí vstříc začlenění do euroatlantických struktur, a to navzdory tomu, že se potýká s řadou více či méně závažných problémů negativně ovlivňujících jeho fungování. Špatná ekonomická situace a nezaměstnanost, korupce a organizovaný zločin, napjaté mezietnické vztahy, ale také nadprůměrná závislost na asistenci mezinárodního společenství jsou jen některé z mnoha. Tato diplomová práce je případovou studií, jejímž cílem je zpracování analýzy vývoje socioekonomické a politické situace v Kosovu. Analýza je provedena s využitím nástroje Fragile State Index organizace Fund for Peace vycházejícího z konceptu dvanácti základních indikátorů rozdělených do čtyř oblastí - soudržnosti, ekonomické, politické a sociální, které mají posoudit, zda lze Kosovo označit jako křehký stát (fragile state).

Abstract:

In February 2021 thirteen years have passed since the southern Serbian province of Kosovo, with the help of many important actors in the international community, declared independence. Thanks to the efforts of its political leaders, it is now moving towards integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, despite the fact that it faces a number of more or less serious problems that negatively affect its functioning. The poor economic situation and unemployment, corruption and organized crime, tense interethnic relations, but also above average dependence on the assistance of the international community are only some of them. This diploma thesis is a case study aiming to analyse the development of socioeconomic and political situation in Kosovo. The analysis is carried out using the critical tool Fragile State Index developed by the Fund for Peace organization. Its underlying concept are twelve basic indicators divided into four areas - cohesion, economic, political and social, to assess whether Kosovo can be described as a fragile state.
