Alcohol and breastfeeding

Abstract:

This thesis studies the issue of alcohol consumption during breastfeeding period. Theoretical part discusses current knowledge about the impacts of alcohol drinking on the lactation performance, as well as the effect of ethanol present in the breast milk on the infant. In the conclusion, we summarize principles that should be followed by the nursing women to minimize adverse effects of ethanol on their child if they choose to drink alcoholic beverages. In the practical part, alcohol consumption before pregnancy, during pregnancy and during lactation was surveyed among Slovak and Czech women using frequency questionnaire. The goal was to compare alcohol intake in the reporting periods and groups of respondents in both countries. In addition, dependency of alcohol consumption during breastfeeding on women education level and relation to smoking was examined.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá problematikou konzumácie alkoholu v období kojenia. Teoretická časť práce pojednáva o súčasných znalostiach týkajúcich sa vplyvu pitia alkoholických nápojov na kvalitu laktácie. Skúmaný je tiež efekt etanolu prítomného v materskom mlieku na kojencov. V závere tejto časti práce sú zhrnuté zásady, ktoré by mala kojaca žena dodržiavať pre minimalizáciu nežiaducich účinkov na svoje dieťa v prípade, že sa rozhodne piť alkohol. V praktickej časti práce bola v súbore slovenských a českých žien pomocou frekvenčného dotazníka zisťovaná konzumácia alkoholu pred otehotnením, počas tehotenstva a v období kojenia. Súčasťou štatistickej analýzy bolo porovnanie príjmu alkoholu v sledovaných obdobiach a v skupinách respondentiek z oboch krajín. Skúmaná tiež bola závislosť pitia alkoholu počas kojenia na vzdelaní žien a ich vzťahu k fajčeniu.
