Abstract:

Gothic Subculture from the 1990s to the Present- The phenomenon of the Gothic subculture appeared in the US first in the early 1980's, then was revived in early 1990's and it has become an integral part of the contemporary American culture and society. The word Gothic occurs frequently in the American vocabulary and is used to describe an atmosphere or literary genre, but also a type of personality or a group of people. The most of Americans under thirty and also a large number above this age are aware of the existence of this subculture and the name they give its members is Goths. The Goths describe themselves with this name and they are proud to be representatives of a different kind of culture than the main stream pop culture. In every small town in the US there lives at least one person called by this name, so it is a phenomenon that can be found anywhere in the country, but the exact numbers and statistics are unknown.
