Expansion of stonefly Leuctra geniculata (Plecoptera: Leuctridae) in the area of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Rigorózní práce je předložena ve formě publikovaného článku a komentáře k dané problematice zahrnujícího nová nepublikovaná data. Práce se zabývá biologií a ekologií pošvatky Leuctra geniculata (Stephens, 1836), která jako jeden z mála zástupců vodního hmyzu od roku 2003 úspěšně proniká do českých toků. Jsou diskutovány možné příčiny její expanze i vztah k proměnným prostředí na řekách, které v ČR osídluje. Ze souboru získaných dat vyplývá, že současné rozšiřování geografického areálu severovýchodním směrem zřejmě probíhá v důsledku působení souběhu několika faktorů. Patří mezi ně zřejmě změna teplotního režimu toků související s klimatickými změnami i obměna společenstev potamálních toků a jejich menších přítoků, které druh preferuje. Úspěšné šíření umožňují i jeho nespecifické ekologické nároky, jako je tolerance k širokému rozpětí teplot, k silnějšímu znečištění i širší potravní preference. Expanze pošvatky je také diskutována ve vztahu k příčinám šíření chrostíka Hydropsyche exocellata Dufour, 1841 a hnízdotvorky Atrichops crassipes Meigen, 1820, kteří rychle osídlili středoevropské toky souběžně s L. geniculata.

Abstract:

This thesis was submitted in the form of a published paper with additional comments to the studied topic based on new unpublished data. It is focused on biology and ecology of stonefly Leuctra geniculata (Stephens, 1836), which is one of a few aquatic insect species that has been successfully spreading in Czech streams since 2003. Possible causes of this expansion and the relation of the species to environmental characteristics of colonized streams in the Czech Republic are discussed. Based on new data, it is possible to conclude that the present expansion of the distribution area in the northeast direction can be related to a joint effect of several factors, which probably include changes in the temperature regime of streams connected with climate change as well as the alteration of assemblages of potamal river reaches and their smaller tributaries preferred by the species. Successful spreading of the species is enabled also by its unspecific ecological requirements such as (i) tolerance to a wide range of temperatures, (ii) tolerance to higher pollution levels, and (iii) wider food preferences. The expansion of this stonefly is discussed also in relation to the causes of spreading of Hydropsyche exocellata Dufour, 1841 (Trichoptera) and Atrichops crassipes Meigen, 1820 (Diptera), which have been rapidly colonising streams in Central Europe simultaneously with L. geniculata.
