Customs and Traditions in Bohemia and Styria - Research and Comparison

Abstract:

This undergraduate thesis deals with holidays celebrated in Styria and Bohemia and with the corresponding customs and traditions kept by the students aged between 20 and 30 years. The Czech Republic and Austria used to have a common cultural background for a long time (until 1918), therefore, I have found it interesting to find out, whether the customs and traditions are celebrated the same way in these regions or whether the general consciousness of the two nations about the same holidays has grown apart after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. The aim of this thesis is to find out which holidays and traditions are still popular and which ones are celebrated within the regions of Styria and Bohemia. I was also interested in how the nature of some individual holidays has been changed. Christmas, for instance, is no longer celebrated only as a religious holiday, it has become the holiday of family and giving. Firstly, the history of Styria is described (from the first inhabitants till nowadays) and the concepts of "custom" and "tradition" are explained. Next, nine major holidays are analyzed and the traditions connected to these holidays are characterized and compared. In the practical part, a survey among Czech and Styrian students is examined. The survey was conducted through a questionnaire. The results of the survey are presented in the summary.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tím, které svátky jsou slaveny ve Štýrsku a v Čechách a jaké zvyky a tradice jsou při vybraných svátcích studenty ve věku 20 až 30 let dodržovány. Česká republika a Rakousko měli po dlouhý čas společné kulturní zázemí (do roku 1918) a považovala jsem tedy za zajímavé, zda jsou zvyky v těchto oblastech i dnes slaveny stejně, nebo jestli se od sebe obecné povědomí obou národů o stejných svátcích a tradicích po rozpadu Rakouska-Uherska vzdálilo. Cílem této práce je zjistit, které svátky a zvyky jsou ve Štýrsku a v Čechách (v dnešní době) známé a které z nich jsou slaveny. Zajímala jsem se také o to, jak se změnila povaha jednotlivých zvyků (např. Vánoce nejsou již slaveny pouze jako církevní/náboženský svátek, nýbrž také jako svátek rodiny a obdarovávání). Nejprve je popsána historie Štýrska (od začátků až po současnost) a jsou definovány pojmy "zvyk" a "tradice". Dále jsou charakterizovány a porovnány zvyky, které jsou dodržovány při devíti vybraných svátcích. V praktické části se zabývám průzkumem, který byl pomocí dotazníků proveden ve Štýrsku a v Čechách mezi studenty vysokých škol ve věku 20 - 30 let. Výsledky průzkumu jsou uvedeny v závěru práce.
