Social Construction of the Spiritual Dimension of Elderly by Social Workers and Priests in Retirement Homes

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá sociální konstrukci duchovní dimenze seniorů u sociálních pracovníků a duchovních v domovech pro seniory. V rámci teoretické části jsou představeny klíčové pojmy sociální konstrukce – kategorizace, idealizace a diskurs. Dále se práce věnuje vybraným oblastem duchovní dimenze seniorů – spiritualita religiozita a jejich pozitivní a negativní vlivy, vděčnost, odpouštění, smysl života a smrt. Kapitola sociální práce se seniory se zaměřuje na sociální práci, kompetence sociálního pracovníka, stáří a seniory. Poslední teoretická kapitola se zabývá postupy práce se seniory ve vybraných oblastech duchovní dimenze seniorů. Metodologická část popisuje hlavní pojmy, z kterých vychází výzkum. Výzkum práce využívá kvalitativní strategii, polostrukturované rozhovory byly provedeny ve čtyřech domovech pro seniory (vždy se sociálním pracovníkem, duchovním, případně pastoračním pracovníkem a seniorem). Získaná data jsou interpretována na základě otevřeného a axiálního kódování. Výsledky interpretace poukazují na důležitost jednotlivých oblastí duchovní dimenze seniorů a jejich specifických významů, i na práci s ní, ačkoliv zpravidla nevyužívá teoretické postupy práce.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the social construction of the spiritual dimension of seniors by social workers and priests in homes for the elderly. The theoretical part introduces the key concepts of social construction - categorization, idealization and discourse. Further, the work is devoted to selected areas of spiritual dimension of seniors – spirituality, religiosity and their positive and negative influences, gratitude, forgiveness, meaning of life and death. The chapter of social work with seniors focuses on social work, social worker´s competencies, old age and seniors. The last theoretical chapter deals with work practices with seniors in selected areas of the spiritual dimension of seniors. The methodological part describes the main concepts on which research is based. The work research uses a qualitative strategy, semi-structured interviews were conducted in four homes for the elderly (always with a social worker, a priest, possibly a pastoral assistant and senior). The obtained data is interpreted on the basis of open and axial coding. The results of the interpretation point to the importance of individual spheres of the spiritual dimension of seniors and their specific meanings, as well as to the work with it, although theoretical working methods are not usually used.
