Timing of the mouse-eared bat arousals during hibernation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývala tématem hibernace u jednoho z našich největších druhů netopýrů, Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797). Cílem práce by-lo popsání časového průběhu probouzení včetně jeho jednotlivých fází, rychlosti ohřevu a ochlazování, ale také rozdílů mezi eutermickými a chladnými periodami probouzení. Zároveň jsem zjišťovala, zda je probouzení synchronizováno se západem slunce, a zda se cirkadiánní rytmicita během hibernačního období mění. Odpovědi na tyto otázky byli zjišťovány pomocí experimentu v umělém zimovišti, kde bylo po dvě zimy (celkem 142 dní) sledováno 2x10 zvířat pomocí termokamery s vysokou přesností a rychlostí záznamu. Díky tomu bylo analyzováno celkem 150 událostí probuzení, které byly rozděleny dle tvaru křivky do 4 různých typů. Podařilo se popsat jak přesný časový průběh, tak cirkadiánní rytmicitu a rozdíly mezi eutermickými a chladnými probouzeními. Práce ukazuje, že zvířata si zachovávala cirkadiánní rytmicitu i během hluboké hibernace, i když byl průměrný čas probouzení posunut o 212 minut za průměrný čas západu slunce. Zároveň nebylo prokázáno, že by se synchronicita během hibernačního období měnila. Výsledky jsou díky velice rychlému záznamu (1 snímek/sekunda) velmi přesné a odhalují zároveň, že během eutermické fáze není tělesná teplota konstantní, jak se dosud předpokládalo, ale rychle osciluje v rozmezí až 10 °C. Práce tak přináší nové poznatky o periodickém probouzení netopýra velkého během hibernace. Tyto informace mohou být využity pro lepší pochopení hospodaření s energetickými zásobami těchto zvířat během zimy, což přímo ovlivňuje jejich šanci na přečkání tohoto období.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to asses the hibernation cycle of one of our big-gest bat species - Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797). Parts of the assessment were the description of the time course of the arousals including heating and cooling rate and the differences between the euthermic and cold arousals. As a part of the research, I also investigated whether the awakening is synchro-nized to the sunset and whether the circadian rhythmicity changes during the hibernation. The answers provided in the thesis are based on an experiment, which took place in an artificial hibernaculum of the species over two winters (a total of 142 days). The samples consist of high precision and sample-rate thermal video sequences of 2x10 specimen. Over 150 wake-up events were recognized and dived into 4 groups based on their characteristics. These data were sufficient to properly describe the exact time course of the arousals, the timing of circadian rhythmicity and the differences between the euthermic and cold arousals. The research shows that the circadian rhythmicity remained ac-tive among the specimen even during the deep hibernation cycle and even though the average wake-up time was delayed by 212 minutes behind the av-erage sunset. Furthermore, it was not proclaimed based on the results that the synchronicity changes during the hibernation. The results are due to the fast video recording precise to a one second resolution and show that the body temperature in the euthermic phase is not constant as it was expected until recently, but rather oscillates up to 10 °C. The thesis therefore brings new in-sights into the periodic arousals of the species during its hibernation. This in-formation may be used in order to better understand the management of the energy resources of these animals during winter, which is essential for their survival during this time.
