Complementarity of Foreign Trade of the Countries Participating in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)

Abstract:

Regionalismus je jev, který se v posledních dekádách čím dál tím častěji objevuje na mezinárodní obchodní scéně. Tento jev pak reaguje na nedostatky nepříliš dobře koordinovaného multilaterálního systému Světové obchodní organizace (WTO) v posledních letech. Právě obchodní integrace v Asií a Pacifiku a vznik největší zóny volné obchodu (FTA) Regionálního ekonomického partnerství (RCEP) lze považovat za jeden z konkrétních projevů trendu regionalismu. Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zhodnotit možné tržní přínosy plynoucí z liberalizace mezinárodního obchodu v rámci RCEP. Na základě teorie přirozených obchodních partnerů přepracované podle Schiffa lze dosahovat přínosů z liberalizace v situaci, kdy jsou zúčastněné trhy navzájem komplementární. K posouzení komplementarity byly využity empirické nástroje analyzující exportní a importní struktury zúčastněných trhů za období 2012 - 2019. Provedené analýzy jednotlivých nástrojů vykazovaly protichůdné závěry, přičemž lze tento spor vysvětlit odlišnou interpretací pojmu komplementarity. Nicméně jeden z užitých ukazatelů, TCI, svojí konstrukcí nejvíce odpovídá definici komplementarity tak, jak ji definoval Schiff ve své teorii. V rámci tohoto ukazatele se pak prokázalo, že trh RCEP je ve velmi malé míře trhem konkurenčním, a proto tržní přínosy z liberalizace obchodu budou značně omezené.

Abstract:

Regionalism is a phenomenon that has become increasingly common on the international trade scene in recent decades. This phenomenon then responds to the shortcomings of the not very well-coordinated multilateral system of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in recent years. It is trade integration in Asia and the Pacific and the emergence of the largest Free Trade Area (FTA) of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) that can be considered as one of the concrete manifestations of the regionalism trend. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to evaluate the possible market benefits resulting from the liberalization of international trade within the RCEP. Based on the Schiff theory of natural trading partners, the benefits of liberalization can be achieved in a situation where the participating markets are complementary. Empirical tools analyzing export and import structures of the participating markets for the period 2012 - 2019 were used to assess complementarity. The analyzes of individual instruments showed conflicting conclusions, and this dispute can be explained by a different interpretation of the concept of complementarity. However, one of the indicators used, TCI, most closely conforms to the definition of complementarity as defined by Schiff in his theory. This indicator has shown that the RCEP market is to a very small extent a competitive market and therefore the market benefits from trade liberalization will be considerably limited.
