The short novel of the Grasso legnaiuolo (The Fat Woodworker) according to different verse and prose versions

Abstract:

This master's thesis is about a novel "La novella del Grasso legnaiuolo", it´s one of the best italian novel from start of the fifteenth century. This renaissance novel describes a funny story of Florence, whose protagonists are the historical personalities of the time. We can find this novel in five different variations, of which three are written in prose (vulgata, codex Palatino 200, Antonio Manetti) and two are in verse (Bartolomeo Davanzati, Bernardo Giambullari), all from the fifteenth century.The object of this thesis is to analyse all of the five existing variations,both comparatively and textualy, with the special attention to the poems. The next object is to clarify, on the basis od the verified facts which variation have served as a model for the poets and as well evaluate their styles of versification and their different reasons that led to versificate this popular novel.

La presente tesi specialistica si occupa de La novella del Grasso legnaiuolo, una delle migliori novelle italiane del primo Quattrocento. Quest᾿opera rinascimentale racconta una beffa situata a Firenze di cui protagonisti sono persone storicamente esistite. Della novella abbiamo cinque diverse redazioni di cui tre in prosa (la vulgata, il codice Palatino 200, la redazione di Antonio Manetti) e due in poesia (le redazioni di Bartolomeo Davanzati e di Bernardo Giambullari), tutte e cinque del Quattrocento. L᾿obiettivo della tesi è analizzare tutte e cinque redazioni esistenti, nel modo comparativo e testuale, con la particolare attenzione alle redazioni in versi.
