Meaning of Ethnicity in Rwandian conflict

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá genocidou, která se odehrála ve Rwandě v roce 1994, přičemž zvláštní důraz je kladen na zhodnocení role etnicity v tomto konfliktu. Cílem práce je posoudit, jaký byl vliv západního myšlení a evropské koloniální nadvlády na vnímání etnicity samotnými Rwanďany, a jeho podíl na uskutečnění genocidy. K tomuto zhodnocení je potřeba definovat, jaké jednání lze považovat za genocidu, dále charakterizovat etnicitu a poukázat na to, jakým způsobem byly kolonizátory vnímány mimoevropské kultury. Následně práce přiblíží historický vývoj Rwandy až po uskutečnění genocidy, který ilustruje, jak dramatický dopad na jednání lidí může mít uměle implementovaná etnicita jako sociální konstrukt.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the Rwandan genocide in 1994, while the main focus is on the role of ethnicity in this conflict. The thesis aims to analyze the influence of western thought and European colonial rule on the perception of ethnicity by Rwandans themselves and the impact on the execution of genocide. It is important to define what behaviour is considered as genocide, to define the ethnicity and to point out the way colonialists perceived non-European cultures. Then the thesis describes historical development of Rwanda until genocide. The historical development illustrates the dramatic influence of artificially implemented social constructs such ethnicity on human behaviour.
