National identity in international relations and its influence on economic prosperity of nations: comparative analysis of Czech and Korean Republic

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje vztah mezi národní identitou a ekonomickou prosperitou na komparativní případové studii České a Korejské republiky. Na ekonomickou prosperitu je většinou pohlíženo jako na determinant národní identity, nicméně základním předpokladem této diplomové práce je, že národní identita a faktory, které ji formují, můžou být determinanty ekonomické prosperity. Jaký je vliv národní identity na ekonomickou prosperitu ČR a KR? A který faktor je z hlediska ekonomické prosperity nejdůležitější? Komparativní analýza jednotlivých faktorů národní identity, jejich zprostředkujících efektů a ekonomických výstupů je použita pro zodpovězení těchto otázek. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že nejvýznamnějším prvkem národní identity souvisejícím s ekonomickou prosperitou jsou pro Korejskou republiku významní cizinci (role jinakosti) a pro Českou republiku síla, respektive slabost národní identity.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze a relationship between national identity and economic prosperity on a comparative case study of Czech and Korean Republic. Economic prosperity is usually seen as a determinant of national identity, however, an underlying assumption of this thesis is an opposite relationship that national identity, and factors that forms it, can be seen as determinants of economic prosperity themselves. What is the relationship between national identity and economic prosperity in case of Czechia and Korea? And what factor is the most important for economic prosperity? A comparative analysis of several factors of national identity, their intermediary factors and economic outcomes is employed to answer these questions. Results of the analysis show that the most important factor of national identity that influences economic prosperity is the role of significant others for Korea and strength, or rather weakness, of national identity for Czechia.
