Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá organizovaným zločinem v USA během prohibice v letech 1920-1933. Úvodní část práce se věnuje faktorům, které vedly k samotnému potvrzení Volsteadova prohibičního zákona, následnému zákazu výroby a distribuce alkoholických nápojů a některými výjimkami ze zákona. Autorka bude ve své práci analyzovat přijetí zákona širokou veřejností, a snahy některých osob, které se snažili obejít participací na protizákonných činnostech nastavená pravidla. Například provozováním nelegálních palíren nebo barů. Hlavní část práce popisuje fungování mafie v Chicagu a New Yorku a jak členové těchto mafií dokázali využít situace a začali na prohibici vydělávat nemalé finanční prostředky. Hlavní část práce se bude věnovat analýze činnosti příslušníků zločinných organizací a autorka se rovněž bude věnovat popisu sporů vznikajících z rostoucí moci a následným vyvrcholením v podobě pivních válek a známého Valentýnského masakru. V neposlední řadě je v práci zahrnut i postup policie a státu proti organizovanému zločinu a jakým způsobem vnímala mafii i americká společnost. Hlavním cílem práce je analyzovat aktivity chicagských gangů, vývoj mafiánské společnosti a následný dopad prohibice na organizovaný zločin a americkou společnost.

Abstract:

This thesis examines organized crime in the U.S. during Prohibition from 1920-1933. The initial part of the thesis examines the factors that led to the actual passage of the Volstead Prohibition Act, the subsequent prohibition of the manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages, and some of the exceptions to the law. The author will analyze the acceptance of the law by the general public, and the efforts of some individuals who tried to circumvent the rules set by participating in illegal activities. For example, by operating illegal distilleries or bars. The main part of the thesis describes the functioning of the mafia in Chicago and New York and how members of these mafias were able to take advantage of the situation and started to make a lot of money from prohibition. The main part of the thesis will analyze the activities of the members of the criminal organizations and the author will also describe the disputes arising from the growing power and the subsequent culmination in the form of the beer wars and the famous Valentine's Day Massacre. Last but not least, the work includes the police and state's actions against organized crime and how the Mafia was perceived by American society. The main aim of the thesis is to analyze the activities of Chicago gangs, the development of mafia society and the subsequent impact of prohibition on organized crime and American society.
