Memory of Places on "Margins" as Topic of Contemporary Czech Prose

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá podobami a variantami tematizace paměti periferních míst v české próze po roce 2000. Práce vychází mj. z aktuálních poznatků interdisciplinárních studií kolektivní paměti, které kombinuje s literárněvědnými analýzami, interpretacemi a komparacemi. Soustředí se na periferní místa, tedy taková, u nichž je patrná pociťovaná okrajová identita v kontrastu k určitému typu centra. Sledujeme, které periferní prostory jsou v současné próze tematizovány, jaký je jejich charakter, jaké jsou podobnosti a variace; dále posuzujeme tematizaci vztahu paměti místa a jeho identity. Analyzujeme vztah postav a paměti míst, stejně jako vliv ideologických aspektů na paměť, kolektivní vzpomínání a zapomínání. Pozornost je věnována klíčové roli materiálního světa, prostoru a toponymie v uchovávání, inscenování a reprezentaci paměti. Nedílnou součástí práce je také všeobecnější analýza relací kolektivní paměti a umělecké literatury a nastínění dosavadních novějších českých literárněvědných prací, které se zaměřily na tuto problematiku.

Abstract:

The following dissertation deals with the forms and variants of the thematization of the memory of peripheral places in the Czech prose after the year 2000. The work is based, inter alia, on current knowledge of interdisciplinary studies of collective memory that are combined with literary analyses, interpretations and comparisons. The focus is set on marginal places, i.e. those where the perceived peripheral identity is obvious compared to a particular type of center. It observes which peripheral spaces are thematized in contemporary prose, what is their character, what are the similarities and variations. Furthermore, the thematization of the relation between the memory of the place and its identity is considered as well as the relationship of characters and memory of places together with the ideological aspect influence on memory, collective remembering and forgetting. The attention is paid to the key role of the material world, space and toponymy in the preservation, staging and representation of memory. An integral part of the given dissertation is also a more general analysis of the collective memory and artistic literature relations and an outline of the recent Czech literary works that have discussed this issue.
