Culture negotiation dynamics in Vietnamese immigrant families in the Czech republic: a perspective of 1,5. and 2. generation

Abstract:

Children from Vietnamese families living in the Czech Republic encounter different type of contact with Czech culture than their parents, which can result in creation of so called intergenerational acculturation gap. Present study focuses on perception and experiencing of those cultural differences from the perspective of children – 1.5 and 2nd generation of Vietnamese immigrants in Czech Republic. Describing how the families dealt with the acculturation gap the study captures an alternative dynamic view on the possibilities in relationships functioning in two cultures. This processes are named „cultural negotiating“ and concern all the actions connected to the cultural practice that are being used to enforce the participants’ demands or accept the demands of the other side. Study stresses the ideas of cultural psychology and assumption that culture and acculturation are dynamic, multidimensional and culture specific processes existing in relationships and interactions with others. In multiple interviews with five participants the processes of negotiation of adolescents’ autonomy have been identified as well as the role of the parents and the aspects of the relationship that were facilitating or restraining the cultural dialogue.

Abstract:

Deti vietnamských rodín žijúcich v Českej republike (ČR) sa od útleho veku dostávajú do odlišného kontaktu s českou kultúrou ako ich rodičia, čo môže mať za následok vznik tzv. medzigeneračnej kultúrnej medzery. Predkladaná štúdia sa zameriava na vnímanie a prežívanie týchto kultúrnych rozdielov z perspektívy detí - príslušníkov 1,5. a 2. generácie vietnamských prisťahovalcov v ČR. Popisom toho, akým spôsobom rodiny s akulturačnou medzerou nakladali, štúdia zachytáva dynamický pohľad na možnosti vo vzťahoch, fungujúcich v dvoch kultúrach. Tieto procesy sú v štúdii pomenované ako „kultúrne vyjednávanie“, zahŕňajúce všetky úkony súvisiace s kultúrnou praxou, ktorými ich účastníci presadzujú svoje nároky alebo akceptujú nároky druhej strany. Štúdia akcentuje stanovisko kultúrnej psychológie a predpokladu, že kultúra a akulturácia sú dynamickými, viacdimenziolnálnymi a kultúrne špecifickými procesmi, existujúcimi vo vzťahoch a interakciách s okolím. Vo viacnásobných rozhovoroch s piatimi participantmi boli identifikované procesy vyjednávania autonómie dospievajúcich ako aj úlohy rodiča a aspekty vzťahu, ktoré tento kultúrny dialóg otvárali a podporovali a tie, ktoré ho naopak tlmili.
