Women in Shakespeare's Plays: Spectators or Players?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou ženských postav v dílech Williama Shakespeara, a to konkrétně v dílech Romeo a Julie, Král Lear a Zkrocení zlé ženy. Tato práce je rozdělena do šesti částí, které jsou shrnuty v poslední kapitole. První část se zabývá historickým pozadím Shakespearových her. Je zde nastíněna situace žen v 16. a 17. století a také jsou zde definovány typické ženské role, které byly obvyklé v této době. Druhá, třetí a čtvrtá část se podrobně zabývají ženskými postavami v dílech Romeo a Julie, Král Lear a Zkrocení zlé ženy. Také je zde nastíněn děj a pozadí těchto her. Pátá a šestá část shrnují předchozí kapitoly dohromady. Jsou zde porovnávány hlavní ženské postavy a také je v těchto dvou kapitolách definována důležitost ženských postav pro vývoj příběhů. Hlavním cílem této práce je definovat typické role, které ženy hrají v Shakespearových dramatech a také objasnit, jestli ženské postavy jsou klíčovými hráči anebo pouhými diváky ve svých hrách.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analyzation of the female characters in the writing of William Shakespeare, concretely in the plays Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and The Timing of the Shrew. This thesis is divided into six parts, which are put together in the last section. First part describes the historical background of the Shakespeare’s writing. There is analyzed the situation of women in the 16th and 17th centuries and also there are defined their typical roles, which they played in the society. The second, third and fourth parts closely analyses the female characters in the plays Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and The Timing of the Shrew, there are also outlined the plots of the plays and the backgrounds of them. The fifth and sixth parts put the ideas from the previous chapters together. There are compared and contrasted the main female characters and also there are defined their important roles in the plays. The aim of this thesis is to define the typical roles which women play in the Shakespeare’s dramas and to find out if the female characters are the key player or just spectators of the plays.
